SafaditM3 Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Hi I'm new to fishing and I was wondering what would be a good rod and reel combo for a complete novice? I'm planning on using for large mouthbass up at Lake Taghkanic, NY. I would prefer something simple to use like a spincast combo. So far I have two rod and reel combos that I've been checking out and they are the: Rhino RSC combo: 39.99 Reel/line capacity 12lbs/80yards Rod Line Weight 8-17lbs Rod length 6ft Rod Strength Medium 4 stainless steel ballbearings Pflueger® Cetina™ Freshwater Spincasting Combo: 49.99 Reel/line capacity 10lbs/75yards Rod Line Weight 6-12lbs Rod length 6ft Rod Strength Medium 4 stainless steel ballbearings So those are the two I've pretty much have come to after a few hours research. So please let me know which one of the two you would prefer and/or let me know of a combo which would be better for my skill level and fish type. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Quote
fishingkidPA Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 by spincast i am guessing you mean a close faced reel with the button to cast? ( the only reason i suggest you get a spinning reel instead of a spincasting is because i think spincasting is more suited for live bait, spinning does both bait and lures better IMO) honestly i think you should get a spinning rod/reel combo. Its as easy as a spincast (or easier) and you will not need to upgrade for a while. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4197073&cp=4406646.4413993.4414792.4414799 ^that seems to be a great deal, i have had experience with field and stream fishing reels/rods. I think they are a great value and work wonderfully for the novice/average fisherman. its got a 7' rod for good casting distance and its medium action. its great for almost any technique to learn as a novice. if you dont know how to cast a spinning reel youtube it. very very simple. 50$ 7+1 ball bearing 1/8-3/4 oz rating so you willl be able to fish weightless plastics up to heavy jigs. SafaditM3 Posted May 5, 2011 Author Posted May 5, 2011 Thanks for the insight it looks good to me. My biggest fear is to buy a rod and reel combo that'll need upgrading sooner than later so I'm glad you showed me this. Thank you Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 6, 2011 Super User Posted May 6, 2011 Well, I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. If you are going to stay with the sport, more money is well spent. The stuff you are considering in this thread is not something you will fish with in a couple of years. State a price and our guys will give you a number of suggestions. Quote
SafaditM3 Posted May 6, 2011 Author Posted May 6, 2011 My max is 50 bucks right now. I wouldn't mind spending more in the future after I have some experience. Quote
