Super User Sam Posted May 4, 2011 Super User Posted May 4, 2011 Justin, go to Wal-Mart or your favorite tackle shop and secure a copy of the free Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The publication gives you the places to fish all over the state, including Tidewater and Suffolk areas. Get a ADC mapbook of Tidewater and look for the blue ponds all over the area. Also check out apartment complexes and office buildings for their ponds. Mount Trashmore is OK but the anti-goose fence is a pain. You can rent small boats at the lake near Christopher Newport University. Wdy Crankbait has information on this location. Also, you can fish the area by the marine museum and I think you can rent a jon boat to fish the place. It is on the main road leaving Virginia Beach heading south. Check it out on the internet or in the telephone book. If you really want to learn local waters and fish tournaments consider joining one of the B.A.S.S. or FLW bass clubs in the Tidewater area. http://www.vafederationnation.com/ http://www.vabass.com/ Also check out the lakes in Suffolk area and places to fish in Newport News and then up towards Gloucester. Good luck. Quote

hookingem Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Cnu has a fishing team. Don't know much about it except I sell two of the guys on the team minnows at my work. I got accepted to Cnu but will be attending Radford due to the location, and truly its a much more budget friendly option with some academic incentive offered to me. Regardless welcome to the forum get to know some of the guys, and learn as much as possible. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 5, 2011 Super User Posted May 5, 2011 I have not idea as I donn't fish that area. Check out the Game and Inland Fisheries booklet and the ADC mapbook of the Peninsula and you will find many places to fish. Have fun in school. Best five or six years of your life. Quote
dhami013 Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 I have fished Lake Maury, which is the lake next to the Mariner Museum. It's the lake right next to CNU. From the banks nada. From a canoe (which is illegal) I've caught quite a few. There is also a pond next to Lake Maury called Kettle Pond. I unknowingly (honest to god) slipped a canoe in there illegally but it was well worth it. There are some hogs in there. No one fishes it, so they munch on anything you throw in there. My buddy who rarely ever fishes was catching some good sized fish, using plastics. If he could do it, then you know they were down for anything. 1 Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Ok, I am a friend of Sam's and Hookingem's. I use to live down there in NN, up by Ft. Eustis. First, Lake Maury is great but, the people that run that place ruin it with so many rules. Bad news, any Newport News fishing is the same way. Look up www.bassjons.com I website for bass fishing in the Hampton Roads area. Second, there is a pond near Bass Pro Shop specifically right behind Saddle Ridge. If you see a tall pale looking guy with too much hair gel in his hair that will be my buddy Sean. Plastics, red worms there, that is what Sean swears by. Cast on the other side of the sand area and work back. Walk along the boardwalk behind Saddle Ridge looking into the water and you will find what I am talking about. If you head up to Newport News park, remember you have to buy a day shoreline fishing permit. Not worth fishing until late summer/fall, same with Hardwood Mill. Now Hardwood mill is accuatly a really good place to fish, but you need to rent a jon boat and should have a trolling motor. I will warn you Hardwood Mill and Newport News Res. are OVERRUN with Hydrilla in the spring/late summer, well until they put the chemical in the water to kill it. In NN fisheries trying shad like or perch is a GREAT pattern there. There are a lot of pike in those waters so, get some heavier line. Anymore questions, PM me. I can tell you about a couple more places. PS, If you go to BPS ask for Justin in the fishing department, he is the most knowledge one there. See I saved you from driving to Walmart and dealing with the traffic at the Jefferson 64 exchange. Quote
dhami013 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Bassjons is a pretty good group of guys. You can drop a thread on their forum and see if anyone has an open back seat. You have to fill out a guest form but it's no big deal. Just pay the way for the tourny, probably run you about 20 bucks. But they're pretty straight. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Yeah, I agree if you join Bassjons, you will learn Lk Prince, Cohoon, Burnt Mills. There are some great fisheries down there! I am hitting Cohoon tomorrow morning with some buddies as a matter of fact. Quote
