First time out on the pontoon this year on my favorite NoVA reservoir... Struggled a bit in the wind but managed to pick up three fairly decent LMB (biggest 3lbs 1oz), a nice smallie (3lbs 7oz -- my PB!!), and a rather ambitious bluegill. Lost a good fish early on, too. The fish really did not seem well-concentrated in any particular area -- I'm guessing they're spreading out a bit, looking for their favorite nesting area -- but shallower was definitely better.

Lots of kayaks out on the water. That place gets busier every year, which I guess is no surprise with all the new housing that keeps appearing every month. Thankfully, most of them don't yet seem to know the secrets to that place! ;)

The smallie is here:

When did you go? I ask because I know there was a recent KBF get together there

Posted

You must have been there on saturday the 30th during the KBF get together. The wind that day was BRUTAL on the kayaks. Many were first timers at BDR. I only managed to land a 17inch bass, losing another at the yak which would have been ~19. Black/blue jig!

Yes, that was it. OK, that explains the number of boats on the water... I thought it seemed significantly busier than usual! :) So what is "KBF"?

Is the wind always brutal out there? My one time it was just plain nasty and every report seems to say the same.

Congrats on the personal best with the smallie.... that is awesome.

Everyone in NOVA has been real quiet lately..... either no one is fishing or no one is talking about all the fish they are catching....haha

Very nice smallie! I tried to make it out that day but something came up :(

MrWrinkle tried to keep it a secret and Quan outed him like it was nothing. That is kinda funny. Too many good fisherman around to try and hide that.

I actually don't have an issue naming Beaverdam, and have done so before. But I've also received messages from people in the past asking me not to use names of places that are considered "hidden gems" by some. So I was being obtuse more for the fun of it than anything. NoVA only has a couple of reservoirs and it doesn't take a Google genius to figure out which one I'm talking about...

Anyway, nice fish! Are you sure those pics are all from this year though? I though that little wooden ramp disappeared a couple of years ago? Yep, it's a very tough place at times, especially with the wind which just always seems to be howling down it.

Ooooops! Should have put a question mark after my original reply. Like someone else said, I can think of at least 3 other bodies of water in NOVA that have smallies!!

What happened to my posts...where am i? Who is on first?

I never fish for smallies so i really wouldnt even begin to know where to go and look for them. Not sayin i dont want to, just havent really made the effort. i know I'm missin out on some good stuff but one of these days I'll make a trip to the New river and try and have one of those 50-100 fish days I hear about. For now im content with fishing Anna in the winter and the Potomac spring thru early fall. There arent smallies in Lake Manassas by any chance are there ?

I hit up beaverdam on friday. I ended up catching 4 and losing one nice one (all large mouth). Biggest fish probably went about 3lbs. I got on the water about 9:30 and all fish were caught within the first hour i was on the water the rest of the day was quiet with no bites. I left about 3pm. I caught 2 fish on senkos and 2 on a small swimbait. I also threw some cranks and jigs. It actually was one of my better days on this lake as like others have said it is a tough little lake. Water temp was 68 and I thought maybe i would see some fish on beds but when i would go into the coves all i would see are the schools of giant carp.
