cwen Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 I clean my reels every year. This year I ripped apart my shimano scorpion 1001 and cleaned everything as usual. Everything went together fine. I was playing with the reel on a rod yesterday and noticed when I hit the thumbar, the lure descends to the ground slowly, almost like the cast control knob is tightened. I played wot the cast control knob and no matter how much i loosen it, the lure drops slowly. Not sure what is rubbing. I can hear a noise too when I reel in, almost like when you sand something. I cleaned the reel again and checked the bearings and they are smooth and turn freely. After the cleaning, the same problem persists. Not sure if something is rubbing. Not sure what it could be. Check the idler. It is the first part of your drag. If the cupped part is not out towards the sleeve then your drag is basically locked up Quote

BILLYsobx Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 After you remove the handle, spacer, star drag knob, the two cupped washers"called leaf spring washers"and the drag clicker-plus you have the palm side of reel open with spool removed. You pull cover off and remove bearing and sleeve for the handle crank the silver washer on top of main gear is called the idler, shimano calls it the key washer on older bass pro reels there is a brass washer then the key washer, the new extremes are like shimano, abu and quantums which have the idler or key washer. It is raised in the center portion or cupped kinda like a dinner plate. The cup goes up or away from gear under idler is drag washers if it is backwards when you mount handle and tighten, that cup tightens the drag too much and doesn't allow spool to spin freely. Quote

If your drag stack was wrong you would have trouble cranking the reel....... When you hit the thumbar and the reel is in cast mode (free spooling), can you loosen the CCC (cast control cap) and get lateral play in the spool? If not, sounds to me like you have something binding in the palming side bearings/shims, or the pinion yoke is slightly binding, from the re-assembly. The scraping/rubbing sound is probably the spool rubbing in the frame race. I would almost bet you have left something out that keeps the spool evenly seated in the frame. kikstand454 Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 sounds to me like you put the spool tensioning cap back on the reel before you reinserted your spool. if you do this and tighten it down..THEN put your spool back in.... it binds up. if you then forced (maybe unknowingly) the sideplate back on and stuff like normal... this would have a binding effect on the spool. that might also account for the sound when you reel in as it could be the pinion rubbing the frame or bearings binding up. whatever it is you should not use the reel until you get it resolved. sounds like something is dying. you dont want it to be the reel. lol. BILLYsobx Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 Very true RM. I failed to pay attention to the post that it was when he was in free spool. The drag and drive gears are not engaged at that time. They have nothing to do with casting. It would only make it TOUGH to turn handle. Definately something spool related Quote
