What do you call it here in wny its pop at least 99% the time even though I just had a clerk correct me when I put the "pop" on the counter and stated I just wanted the pop when asked if that's it. So is it pop or soda or just cola.

In western Pa most say "pop". Towards the center of Pa they say "soda".

You could always surprise everyone and call it a "cola soda pop".

Wasn't Rob Lowe's name in Coppola's " The outsiders, Sodapop?

We called it pop in Michigan, when I lived NY it was called soda.

I call it soda, but all my friends call it pop.

I think most call it pop in Ohio or at least around Cincinnati.

My family in Kentucky calls it soda, but my family in Florida calls it Coke which doesn't make any sense.

Even if they want a Sprite or root beer, they call it Coke.

That is Kentucky simplicity right there. Thats why its so laid back down there.

When a waitperson asks me what I want to drink, the answer will be Coke, Sprite, Sierra Mist, Ginger Ale, etc., depending on what brand they dispense. The generic term around here for soft drinks is soda.

I call it something to mix with my Bourbon........

Michigan was Pop

Kentucky is Soda or "Hey Y'all want some dat fizzy drink"

Fizzy lifting drink.....

In central KY it's a mix between soda and pop....eastern ky it's just pop and most people around here don't mess with water unless it has co2 and high fructose corn syrup in it.

Rochester, it's all "coke."

Waitress: "What'll you have to drink?"

Patron: "A large coke, I guess."

Waitress: "What kind?

Patron: "Orange."

LOL, it isn't actually like that, but its a mix of soda and pop, sometimes soda-pop. As a kid, ew always said "pop."

This was brought up a couple of years ago and believe it or not, someone posted a US map with names of soft drinks shaded in different colors by regions. Don't know about the rest of the south, but growing up in Texas everything was "coke", like you said. However, in Oklahoma it is called "pop". While attending sporting events and the like, it seems that the word "coke" is being replaced by "soda" here in Texas. Kind of sad. :(

soda.

i can understand people calling it pop, but it just doesn't make sense to me to call all soft drinks cola/coke/etc. because those are actually specific kinds of soft drinks.

i once saw a map showing the distribution of the nicknames. it's fascinating how distinctly defined the areas are where its called soda, pop, coke, etc.

I was born in Texas and grew up in Louisiana. It was always "Coke" as Francho posted "what kind of coke do you want"? - I'll have a Dr. Pepper and a root beer. OK, I be right back with the cokes. That's just how it is. LOL

I never hear people say pop around here. I'll either use the brand name or call it soda, as do most of the locals.

If you're all out of pop in Michigan, you could always drink 'wadder'

If you're out of soda in New Jersey, you can drink 'wooder'

Here in MA, when I was growing up, it was tonic (my father still says that), then it was like Francho said, Coke, now it's more like Rhino said, by brand name. I to this day, call it soda pop. If you're at a restaurant and you don't know if they have coke or pepsi, you just ask for a cola, if that's what you want (pepsi or coke).
