mrlitetackle Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 i just picked up a bottle of the Yum attractant today (shad smell) at BPS.. haven't tried it yet (or any scent for that matter), but im looking forward to it on my next trip... just wondering how those who have tried it...., well liked it. Quote
Big Phish Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 i recently started using scent too and i did a little experiment. i fished a green pumpkin senko, with scent and started to hook into fish. by maybe the 3rd fish i replaced the senko with no scent and 2 casts later hooked up again. so basically i'm not convinced that scents make a difference. mrlitetackle Posted May 19, 2009 Author Posted May 19, 2009 kinda my thoughts as well.. ive never used it before, and i have caught plenty of fish...... thought id give it a try, just wondered how everyone liked this brand. Quote
bigtimfish Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 i use the yum in crawfish scent. does it work? i do not know. when i use it i catch fish, when i dont use it i still catch fish. i do think that it could be redone with something that makes it stay on your bait longer. it seems to me that its only good for about 3 casts then you have to re apply. Super User CWB Posted May 19, 2009 Super User Posted May 19, 2009 Seems to be all Bill Dance uses (or says he does). Scents may not necessarily get you more bites but they definitely will help fish hold on longer. They can do absolutely no harm so there is no reason not to use them. I have very acid ph skin which through research has been found to be a negative factor to bass holding a bait. I use Megastrike, Chompers Garlic and JJ's Magic. It is probably a personal thing but most guys I know don't throw plastics without some scent. Most plastics today actually have some type of scent cooked in and are salt impregnated so you actually are using scents and not knowing it. Quote
Mark J Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 we use megastrike attractant, it is a gel type texture, so it stays on your bait much longer than the sprays....we mostly use it when it is dark out, early morning and evening and yes it definitely does seem to help generate more bites and I think it helps the fish hang on to the bait longer for better hookups Quote
MSPbass Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I use YUM Garlic. It lasts more than 3 casts, that's for sure. I usually put it on after a new bait's been used a while and the original salt and scent are wearing off. When I don't smell spaghetti dinner anymore, I know it's time for another squirt. I'll often get in the car, at the end of the day, and still get a whiff of the stuff that got on me at some point earlier. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 The crawfish and shad scents are the worse stuff i ever used! Sure, the smell is right on the $ but it is gone after one cast! If you want a good attractant that stays on all day or until lure rips, get B.A.N.G. in the spray can. I use the crawfish scent and it lasts as long as the lure holds up! Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 i use the yum in crawfish scent. does it work? i do not know. when i use it i catch fish, when i dont use it i still catch fish. i do think that it could be redone with something that makes it stay on your bait longer. it seems to me that its only good for about 3 casts then you have to re apply. I agree! Always reapplying that stuff. I like to think I have decent success with the craw scent, but to be honest, the only true reason I use scent is because I smoke, and I feel like putting some scent (such as shad or craw) covers up the unnatural smoke scent that I am sure passes from my fingers to my bait. When I quit smoking I will likely quit using scent...but who knows, its all about the confidence! Quote
John Boat Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I don't use scents too often but when i do, i generally take a handful of plastics out the night before and put them in a zip-loc bag and spray some scent in the bag to soak overnight. Not really sure if that helps or hurts. I catch fish at the same rate, with or without scents.... Quote
InLikeFinz Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I've used the Yum Shad spray and have had no luck with it as well. It also temporarily turns your bait purple if I'm remembering correctly. Of course I've been known to get skunked frequently no matter what I do. Hehe. Quote
Travis O Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I use yum spray scent but it is mostly just to cover up any foul odors. No matter how hard I try, it always seems that my hands come in contact with gas or something else negative whether I realize it or not. Quote
RandyP57221301600215 Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I always use attractant and swear by it. The yum products are great. I think it helps. Can't hurt! Quote

Super User Fishing Rhino Posted May 21, 2009 Super User Posted May 21, 2009 I use the Yum, Megastrike, and JJ's. Do they work? Who's to say for sure. If you catch fish after applying it, is it the stuff, or would you have caught them anyway? The first day I tried YUM, I caught fish like crazy. I've been using it or one of the other products since then. Have I had slow days using it? Yes. All I can tell you is this. Since it might have improved the catch rate, I hesitate to go back to au natural. It only costs pennies a day to use it. Cheap insurance. Just in case..................................... Quote
