Super User roadwarrior Posted February 12, 2007 Super User Posted February 12, 2007 Okay, I'm not going to disclose my source, but let me assure you, he is da MAN! I ran into an "acquaintance" last Saturday at the Memphis BPS. He was helping a couple of guys buy new baitcasters, Calais 100's. We were chatting and he grabbed my basket and asked, "What's ya gettin'?" I had a few bags of Senkos, a Yo-Zuri RatlN' Vibe, Rapala X-Rap and another Lucky Craft Pointer 100. Dude says, "Want in on a little secret?" Well, if I could tell you who I was talking to, your answer would be YES! So, wassup? I already have three Plano boxes of jerkbaits (Smithwick Rogues, LC Pointers and Rapala Husky Jerks and X-Raps), so I don't really "need" more. Well, WRONG! My "friend" tells me what is hot, red hot, are the Slender Pointers. They apparantly run much deeper and have a significantly tighter wobble than the original Pointers. He has been KILLING the smallmouth, the biggun's, on these lures. They can be considerd a completely new class of jerkbait. It doesn't matter how much you think you have, there's always "something more." Quote
Shad_Master Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Well actually that is not hard to figure out -- your friend is the BAIT MONKEY!!! Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted February 12, 2007 Super User Posted February 12, 2007 RW, I'm trying very hard to cut down the amount of stuff I'm lugging around. You, sir, are not helping. Cheers, GK Quote
Skidder Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Don't know who your friend is, but I agree with him. I've been throwing them since they first came out. I love that the Slender Pointer has an extra treble for those smallies that like to slap at a bait. Quote
Guest avid Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I seem to recall that when the slender pointer was introduced it was targeted to smallie fisheman. I don't see the secret here, but to have a recommendation from a serious pro has to be a good thing. did he mention a color or particualar retireve? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 12, 2007 Author Super User Posted February 12, 2007 Chartreuse Shad & Ghost Pearl avid, You're right, smallmouth fishermen were the target, but I have had good luck with the original 100's & 128's. So, with too many jerkbaits already, I have only purchased two of the Slenders and I don't think I have ever fished them! Hmm... I need to get out a little more often. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 but let me assure you, he is da MAN! Thanks RW, but I wasnt the one that sold you the baits. Â ;D Let us know, better yet show us pics of how well they perform. Quote
The_Natural Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I have quite a few Slender Pointers...They are indeed a great bait. Â I scored 10 Slender Pointers from BPS online last year for $6.88 each...5 Shell White 97MR's, and 5 Matte Pumpkin 112MR's. Â I've also got American Shad and Original Tennessee Shad, but I haven't thrown those yet. Â Quote
Hawgin Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Those are the only LC's I own. Â They always seem to be the ones that are available when Cabelas or BPS has a clearance sale on LC's. Â I know they are smallie baits, but the big mouths don't seem to have a problem biting them either. Â I love chartruese shad, shell white, and american shad. Quote
castaway Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 You should have used "free beer and naked women" as a title. Its about as subtle as Top secret was . Â Thanks, there goes some more money gone before I get it. Ivan Quote
basspro48 Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I caught on to the Slender Pointers last spring and I'm glad I did. Smallies, spots, and largemouths will come from miles around to slam these baits. My favorite one is the 112 in American Shad. Quote
cbfishalot Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 RW On alot my posts I have been saying that the slender pointer was my #1 jerkbait. There a great bait with the 3 trebles and slender profile. The smallies can't resist these baits. The other bait I use alot is the staysee. The staysee and the slender pointer profile looks almost the same. After I started fishing the slender pointer I hardly fish any x-raps, husky jerks, or rogues. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted February 12, 2007 Super User Posted February 12, 2007 I've got quite a few Slender's myself. I probably dont throw them as much as I should but I do like the action they have....and the extra set of hooks! Quote
Lard_Bass Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 How do the actions of the Slenders compare to the Smithwick Suspending Rogues? Also, do any of you guys weigh down your jerkbaits (golf tape, added sinkers, etc.). Â I just a tip that a lot of jerkbaits tend to float upwards instead of running lower into the strike zone. Â Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 13, 2007 Author Super User Posted February 13, 2007 cbfishalot, Sorry I missed some of those posts, this was all new to me. Lard_Bass, That is a typical problem with Rogues. Don't get me wrong, they are bass magnets, but Smithwick makes a cheap lure at a relatively low price and they DON'T CARE. I have exchanged more Rogues at BPS than all other lures combined. Yes, they can be adjusted with dots, but that still ticks me off! Quote
Super User 5bass Posted February 13, 2007 Super User Posted February 13, 2007 The Slenders have a more erratic side-to-side action than the regular Pointers.....its a TRUE reaction bait and there's no need in deadsticking one, keep it MOVING,the erratic darting and rolling action drives 'em crazy. Quote
tacoman Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 am i reading the price tag on these things correctly at nearly 20$ or is that a typo :-? Quote
Super User 5bass Posted February 13, 2007 Super User Posted February 13, 2007 They are usually a little higher than the regular Pointers but if you snoop around here and there, you can find them for 13-14 bucks. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 13, 2007 Author Super User Posted February 13, 2007 I buy almost all Lucky Craft lures on sale. Sometimes unadvertised, in-store discounts are REALLY special. BPS has some on sale almost everyday! If you are patient and have a store close, where you can drop by often, you will find LC on sale for less than $7 ocassionally. Quote
cbfishalot Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 RW No need to be sorry to me just the bait monkey for not having them yet. Â You will love the slender pointers. Â I know you fish for a lot of smallies and they are the ticket. Â The color I have caught the most fish on is the ghost minnow. Â Reading alot of your posts I know your big on the larger pointers like the 128's. Â I need to pick some of the larger pointer and the slender pointers. Tacoman Your eyes are not going bad the price is $17.99 and $18.99 for he slender pointers. Â They are worth the money as long as you don't lose one on the first cast. Quote
Ev_Het Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Sorry to get off topic.. At the BPS site there are some BDS cranks, bevy shads, lipless and sammys on for 6.98 right now. This kinda relates to the questions regarding sales on some LC baits Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 15, 2007 Author Super User Posted February 15, 2007 Exactly my point: Some LC lures are on sale all of the time. Just be patient. Quote
