To all my fellow Va fishermen out there, if you guys have never fished Sandy River Resivour, do yourself a favor a try it out. I fished there for the first time on Monday with a buddy of mine. Together we caught around 20 bass, i was the lucky one and caught the biggest a 4 pounder. We fished from the boat dock all the way back to the standing timber and caught fish everywhere we went, mainly on pumpkin seed worm wacky rigged. I highly reccomend this place, on top of the heavy action it is a beautiful place to take in wildlife scenery.

I fished it the first day it was opened to fishing when there was just a muddy road leading to the ramp. In recent years I can't seem to force myself to choose that lake over Briery Creek unless it is Winter.

sandy is a great place!! I go there when i dont feel like dealing with the stumps at briery  I also like watching the bald eagles! Fishing is great there with alot of good size fish! But at times can get packed and every turn you make there is a boat...i guess same with briery but overall i love both sandy & briery! B)

I caught a 4 pounder in the standing timber. Was talking to a oldtimer at the boat ramp and he told us a guy caught a 13 pound bass a few weeks ago bank fishing.

would be cool for someone like " Hook N Look " to hold a show at briery or sandy so we could see all the monster bass and where they are holding from a underwater view! I bet you find schools of 13+ pounders swimmin around B)

lets get over 16.4 !!!!!!! come on briery or sandy river !!!

Anyone on here have any suggestions on how to approach Sandy River? First trip out this weekend, so I'm looking at least some direction.

I fished sandy for couple hours this weekend...caught 12bass all under 3lbs. All came off weightless soft plastics in about 3-6ft of water! I seen lots of bream beds but no bass beds.

Kaotic Ive had good luck with top-water EARLY in the morning...i also have good luck with cranks and lip-less cranks as well. The pads and vegetation is starting to come up also. Most my fish came off some type of structure w/ wood in relation to deep water. I did see some big females that were skiddish on the flats and would take off at sight of boat or movement. Good luck i think you will love this place!! There is some standing timber on upper & lower end of lake along with small cypress?? trees coming out of water in several locations that have paid off for me. I used mostly soft plastics this last outing bc i was to lazy to crank ;)

@Aluma-Bass: Thanks for the info. Didn't think many people on here would share some pointers on water producing trophy bass. Thank! I'm looking forward to my first fishing trip there, hopefully Friday is not crowded on the water. Is the lower end to the right or left of the ramp? Should I be weary of stumps in most of water? I plan to use gas motor to get around. And how early can you launch?

Just to add to what has been said, and just FYI, on friday the lake will be PACKED. Probably hard to find a parking spot. I have been going mostly on tuesdays and thursdays so far this spring and it still has 30 trucks in the parking lot, though some belong to shore fisherman. As far as getting around, you will not have any problem hitting stumps. Just don't ride to close to the shore. From the ramp you can go left or straight. There is standing timber to the left and if you go straight and then left down the creek arm you will find more timber. But there are plenty of fishy looking places along the way. Have fun

Cool thing about sandy open 24/7! So as early as you can get up! Unless you go into the timber fields you wont run into much stumps as you would briery, main lake is pretty wide open. It does have a good amount of lay-downs. The ramp IS kinda the lower end of the lake...as you come out of ramp the dam will be over to the left you can also go under the bridge you see and fish that section..some timber is in the back there. Also about mid lake you will see a cove to the left that will lead you on around to the timber in the backside. It all looks great out there Ive caught fish all over the lake. i may also go on Friday but got to wait till later in the week to be able to decide on that. Make sure your legal as wardens at times do hit the area hard but they usually check the usual and move on bc they have a lot more boats to check!! Remember 9.9hp ;)

Also one day think about hitting Briery up while your in the area as its not far from sandy at all...

and to add to the parking...if you get there early you wont have a prob it does get packed but ive always found a parking spot. I do notice after about 8-9am parking lot is packed then after about 1-2pm all your morning guys leave then you get your evening crowd start coming in shortly after. The ramps are great though...2 ramps and people are pretty good at putting in/taking out fast so it moves quick.

@Joe D: Thanks for the insight. If everything goes to planned, I'll be there before sunrise.

@Aluma-Bass: Hopefully I'll see you out there. Everything is legit. My motor is only 8hps, I'm excited I can bring it...save some battery power. I heard about Briery before I heard about Sandy. That too is on the bucket list for the year.

Now the weather forecast is looking like showers on Friday afternoon. Considering venturing out on Saturday. May still go Friday, if weather stays light rain.

Looking as though the rain showers are not coming until late in the afternoon. If we get there early enough, we'll be on the road when it's expected to start. News says only light showers, either way, I'm going. Loading the vechicle tonight!
