hookingem Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 So as bad as it is, and I know my parents hate it after paying for braces. I tend to bite the line to cut it when fishing flouro or mono. Anyone have this habit? Still do it? If you broke it how did you do so? I am thinking about starting to wear a lanyard around my neck with nail clippers attached. Quote
Quitlimpin Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 I do it constantly. Even carry clippers. Guess old habits are hard to break... Quote
hookingem Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 I can't break it! Iv'e been doing it since I saw my dad do it when I was like 8. What an example he is Ugh. Quote
hookingem Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 I need to cut it...no pun intended lol! Cutting 20 pound suffix with your teeth cant be good. Quote
hookingem Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 so just seeing the results is what made you stop? I hope I can stop before I notice these results.... Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 get a sharp scissors. It takes less than 1 sec cutting through a line. U will appreciate the speed n maybe use it instead of ur 5 second tooth Quote
wisconsin heat Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 get a pair of nail clippers and clip it on your shirt collar, my front teeth have so many groves it looks like a saw blade. and im only 16 Quote
intheweeds Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 I use to do this. The way that I stopped was buying nail clippers on a lanyard (just like you are thinking of) and this worked for me. They hang around your neck so you always have them close by. Try it, your teeth will thank you. Quote
fishinfantatic Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Didn't think about a lanyard. I've always kept the clippers in my tacklebox and somehow manage to lose them every other trip. I spend as long looking for them as I do using them. Quote
guitarkid Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 get a Gerber Multi tool. it is one hand open/close has a set of pliers for hook removal with a set of cutters at the base of the pliers. -gk Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted April 27, 2011 Super User Posted April 27, 2011 When fishing from the bank, I wear a lanyard that has nail clippers and a 3ft tape measure. In the boat, I have both braid scissors and nail clippers right at hand. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 27, 2011 Super User Posted April 27, 2011 Nailclippers work fine and they pack in your pocket real small. I never fish without a pliers in a sheath on my belt, cuts mono and braid.... Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 AJ, I'll be sure to punch you in the shoulder next time I see you bite the line off when we go fishing next. I'll shoot you a text today when the rod comes. Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 27, 2011 Super User Posted April 27, 2011 Save your teeth, use a siccors or a finger nail trimmer. Not only are you going to damage your teeth but you are putting dirty water in your mouth. I used to use my teeth to cut the line but my dentist talked me out of it when I had to get one of my front teeth bonded. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Aj, I would try chewing on something when you are fishing. Say sunflower seeds. It would be a lot harder to cut the line with a mouth full of seeds. That way and probably make you pull out clippers. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 The only problem with a lanyard is that when you bend over to pick somethin up it will hang down and possibly get in the way..I use one of these...Retractable key chain w/ toenail clippers. It hooks to your belt or just to your waist band, its outta the way and the toenail clipper are a bit bigger to give you more cutting power and easier to work with in the cold. Quote
hookingem Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 Thanks for all the good ideas I am going to make a legit effort to try and stop doing this! So Woody the punch think sounds like a good idea.... Quote
Fish Chris Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Man, I have chewed through about 9 million pieces of monofilament in my life. Heck, I'd still be doing it today..... But about 2 years ago I had some dental work > on my rear teeth (molars). So then, the next time I went to bite through some fishing line, the sharp spot I always used, would not close quite tight enough to cut the darn line ! I was ticked ! Heck, I'd still be cutting line with my teeth today ! Actually, I still try, but I really have to gnaw on it, and take a couple of tries at it.... Whereas before, I could cut 30 lb mono in a split second, first try, every time > faster than you could grab the nail clippers around your neck. Freaking dentist screwed up my line cutters Fish Quote
SmokeRise1 Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Got these in the bargain cave for about $30 a few months ago. They thread right on your belt, they cut braid as well as mono, are always at the ready, slide right back into the sheath when you are done and will save your teeth and your time fumbling for clippers. More expensive then nail clippers or scissors, but neither of these will help you get a lure out of a toothy pickeral or pike's mouth. Edit. Tried to post an image of "Cabela's Advanced Angler Pro Series Machined Aluminum Pliers" but couldn't. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted April 27, 2011 Super User Posted April 27, 2011 I broke my front tooth when I was young biting line, among other things......I carry 3 pairs of pliers with line cutters with me when I fish, just to make sure I don't do that again! Jeff Quote
hookingem Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 Glad to see im not the only one doing this lol! I am goong to make an effort to stop though, before I have to have a tooth bonded! :/ Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 27, 2011 Super User Posted April 27, 2011 Switch to braid & then you will have to use scissors. 1 Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 I have tried to stop as well. Hard thing to do. It is so automatic that I don't even think about it anymore... Maybe this can be a resolution from here on out... Quote
Gangley Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 I stopped after I broke my second tooth doing it. Scissors were my next aquisition, and they have stayed with me since, whether fishing from bank or boat. Quote
