Cboogie Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 im looking for the best type of line. im currently using pline. its flurocarbon coated line so you get the best of both worlds. its thin and smooth and does get bad line memory. BUT lately its been failing and snapping on me. i could just boost up the 12pound test to 15 but im curious on you guys' opinion Quote
Javelin200 Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 If you're talking about Pline Floroclear, I use it pretty religiously. 12# for crankbaits and traps, 15# for senko's and squarebills, and 6# on my dropshot rod. Others may disagree, but I love it. That's not to say I haven't had problems with it....but I've learned to be diligent about checking my line, retying often, and tying clean knots. This seems to have all but eliminated any break-off issues I experienced with it early on. It's excellent handling line (in my opinion) for both baitcast and spinning gear. Quote
Fat-G Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Floroclear broke on me on several occasions. I won't bomb on it though, maybe I got a bad spool. Quote
Super User Marty Posted April 26, 2011 Super User Posted April 26, 2011 lately its been failing and snapping on me. i could just boost up the 12pound test to 15 but im curious on you guys' opinion I'm not familiar with that line, but I've fished years without having lines snap. There's something going on to cause that and if nothing changes except going to 15#, I'm afraid the problem will persist. Line snapping is not normal and you need to find out why it's happening. Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted April 27, 2011 Super User Posted April 27, 2011 It depends on what type of Pline you're talking about, they all say FC coated. I had never broke off a fish until 3 weeks ago and broke off three at Guntersville, 2 on 15lb seagur red label on hookset or just after and one on 15lb Pline floroclear after I swung him into the boat, around 2 1/2 pounds. I usually use floroclear in the 10-12lb range on shallow cranks, I probably won't use the 15lb again and probably stick the CX or CXX. If you're using CX then switch to CXX. Quote
Rangerjoe Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 My opinion of P-line is as follows: CXX extreme abrasion resistance, but also extremely thick line. CX good handling line about like Berkley XL Fluroclear breaks at the sight of water. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted April 27, 2011 Super User Posted April 27, 2011 It always amazes me how different peoples thoughts are on line. I tried Pline CXX (6lb) and threw it all away after the 2nd trip with it. It kept breaking for no apparent reason. But gave the flouroclear (10lb) a try and it has performed very well for me. Quote

I have just started fishing a BASS club here in Richmond using finesse tatics mostly. Eight pound Pline Flouroclear and not had a problem with it at all (no break offs)! Fishing senkos and Paca Craws, very sensitive and has done very well for me. One thing I have noticed, make sure you get a good knot on the line and you should be good to go. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 28, 2011 Super User Posted April 28, 2011 As observed earlier, everyone has their own opinions and experiences with line. Personally, I've never had a good experience with P line. I've spooled it on spinning reels and bait casters, in appropriate lb tests. It worked ok with practice casts in the back yard. Once I get it on the water I get tangles, backlashes, reduced casting distances, uncalled for line snaps and so forth. I had several spools of the stuff I'd picked up on the recommendations of guys I knew. I've ended up trashing it all. Maybe I'm allergic to the stuff, I don't know. Maybe it just doesn't like me. I know I won't buy any more. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 29, 2011 Super User Posted April 29, 2011 For most fishing nothing but braid is considered. I use P line floroclear on 1 rig, an Avet mxj, the reel calls for 300 yds of 20# line and I have quite a bit more on the reel. The line has performed well for med size fish, like kings, tuna, sailfish, holds a good knot and joins nicely with a blood knot. It's a good open water line. Quote
MightyMichigan Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 I find that the best line is BassPro XPS Fluoro for everything but topwater..... if you have a line that you like but the manageability isnt there try using KVD line conditioner..... then for when im not using fluoro, im using powerpro braid (green for topwater, hig- vis yellow for flipping and pitching). I hope this helps everybody out. 1 Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted April 30, 2011 Super User Posted April 30, 2011 It's been said already and it's worth repeating : Slobber like a dog on the line before you cinch your knot THEN inspect it. For example, if you use a Trilene or clinch knot and the coils are not stacked neatly, it's not right. If there is a bulge or something looks out of place, retie it. Detail is everything, it's gotta be perfect. A lot of heat and friction are generated tying a knot, wetting is crucial. Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 2, 2011 Super User Posted May 2, 2011 I wish I knew what the best line was! In an earlier life I used Trilene mostly tho I did try Maxima and Stren. Now that I've gotten back into fishing, I have spinning and baitcasting reels set up with several different brands. I have yet to make any kind of decision as to which I like the best. Or if I will continue to search...which is likely. Ask 10 guys and you will probably get 8 different answers. It amazes me how many will swear by a certain brand, yet others swear at it. Take Yo-Zuri for example. Lots of members here swear by this line, and feel it is the best thing to come along since sliced bread. Yet I've read several posts that complain of unexplained break-offs using this line. I haven't tried it yet, but will considering the number of rave reviews it has gotten. It comes down to asking questions, reading reviews, and making a decision based on something you read that struck a cord with you. I liked what I read about Izorline, so I bought a spool of 15# on sale to give a try. I've got P-Line CX based on previous reviews. Also have Sufix Elite, and a few others. Too many choices! Quote
Super User tomustang Posted May 4, 2011 Super User Posted May 4, 2011 I've had the same problem with pline fluroclear 4 and 10lb. One thing I've notice with the spools I got is that the line doesn't feel consistently in spec with the diameter, which would make it weaker altogether. Seems like it was pulsating off the machine during the production. Quote
Fish Chris Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I wouldn't even consider anything but braid. Almost always with a flouro or regular mono leader. Fish Quote
Jason Penn Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I've went thru lots of different lines and am back to using BPS Excel. The one thing that bothers me the most with it is memory. I got in some of the KVD spray and used it on all my reels that have the BPS line and was really surprised how well it worked! Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Great to hear about the KVD spray, I just got some a couple of days ago. Quote
FL_Sharpshooter Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Yeah, the KVD L&L spray is the real deal. I use BPS XPS fluoro line all the time (17#), I've never had a single breakoff. I must say though, I always thoroughly look over my line for any frays after a few casts. I was told the BPS XPS fluorocarbon line is the Seagar Invisx, not sure if that's true though. Quote
