I'm looking into buying a new casting reel mainly for throwing spinnerbaits or shallow crankbaits. I'm wondering what gear ratio to look at. I assumed that 6.4:1 would be fine, but would a 5.3 suffice? I know its probably a silly question, but what can I say...I'm more at home with a spinning rod, light line and a grub!!

Any advice is appreciated and thanks in advance.

I would suggest a BPS Pro Qualifier, it comes in any gear ratio you could possably ever want, and left or right hand retrives.

As long as you're not talking about very heavy spinnerbaits, a 6.4:1 (~26-27 IPT) gear ratio would work nicely. Some folks like 7.x for those purposes but other folks would consider that a bit fast. If you WERE talking about heavy spinnerbaits with big blades, a low 5.x would work but not be as versatile as a 6.4.

I'm going to be using 1/4 to 3/8 oz spinnerbaits in no more than 10 ft of water most of the time.

Thanks for the advice.

I would pick up a 6:4:1. If you want to burn a spinnerbait or a crankbait you could just reel faster, if you wanted to throw a medium diving crankbait you could reel at a good pace and if you want to slow roll and spinnerbait or throw a deep diver you could just slow down your retrieve.

My spinnerbait reel is an old round Pro Qualifier 6.1:1, and AFIC, it's perfect. I can slow it down to 'slow roll', or speed it up enough to wake a bait. I have the same reel set up on another rod for traps and mid-depth cranks.

I use a Powell Squarebill Rod teamed with a Revo SX in 6.4:1 for shallow cranks.

Use/buy what your budget will allow, and what best suits your fishing situation. If your only option is the 5.3:1, don't sweat it, it will do the job just fine. It's more beneficial to have a rod with the right action for reaction type baits.

I use a curado e50 for both of those uses (6.4)

I was looking at the Revo SX in a 6.4:1 and will be pairing it on a 7'3 Kistler Mag MH.

Sounds like a killer combo! go for it!

Anything 6.4 and below should be fine with those applications. Pretty easy to just reel a little slower or faster depending on the situation.

X2. My thinking is get something in the middle and you can go faster or slower. I have two citicas and one curado 300DSV, all of which are in that 6.x:1 range. Another thing to look at is the IPT, which in the end is what really matters.

Ratio means nothing, compare inches per turn (IPT) when comparing reels.

Anything 25-30 IPT will be fine.
