zenyoungkoh Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Hi people, Im new to bass fishing. and when i ask many anglers what to throw for large mouth bass, most they say worm, craw, cranks etc. But very very few of them would mention grubs. I myself have caught my first few LMB on grubs. In fact i have caught most of my LMB on grubs. I think grubs do a great job imitating bait fish, so why isnt a popular bait for largemouths? Quote
SwimJigs Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 I agree, grubs are great bait fish imitators. Especially on the end of a swim jig! Quote
Super User grimlin Posted April 25, 2011 Super User Posted April 25, 2011 shhhhh.....You should be saying they suck, nobody should be using them. Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 lol is that really why its not popular!?!!! Quote
Super User grimlin Posted April 25, 2011 Super User Posted April 25, 2011 They've been around for a long, long time. They are more popular than you might think. They are not just used for Bass fishing though. Heck,I had one when I was 10 in my old tackle box so I know they've been around at least 25 years. Quote

All tackle shops i went to carried them. but why many articles and anglers dont mention it as often as the worm/craw/swimbaits etc. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted April 25, 2011 Super User Posted April 25, 2011 They do from time to time in articles. Fat albert grub is mentioned a lot.It almost a well kept secret when they are using them.I believe some are using them when all else isn't working. Most pro anglers have to sell the new items they are sponsored to advertise. Grubs aren't new and pretty much a lot of people know grubs already catch fish. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 25, 2011 Global Moderator Posted April 25, 2011 Grubs aren't exciting or flashy baits to fish. I think that is why you don't hear about them a lot. You are right that they are great baits for bass, and about anything else that will eat a lure. I would not feel comfortable going fishing without having some in the boat. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted April 25, 2011 Super User Posted April 25, 2011 Grubs are a versatile, multi-species bait that can be fished in many ways. Sizes range from 1" to about 6" so you can target fish from small to large. I mostly use 5" single-tails and I throw them whenever I think the fish are shallow. Unlike most folks, I don't fish them on a jig-head but rig them weightless and weedless on a 1/0 EWG hook. I usually get bit on the fall, but if not, then I will swim the bait back or get it up to the surface and bring it back as a topwater. Rigged weightless, single tail grubs will spin on the retrieve and it's best to add a swivel above the bait. Do they work? I caught 791 fish on 5" grubs last year. I haven't used them much yet this year but just yesterday I put the canoe in a little 4 acre lake - the bass were mostly in inches of water right against the bank - perfect for the grub. I got 19 bass - smaller fish mostly - 12" to 15" typical of that lake. I did have one 17" fish that hit the bait on the fall, and a nice 18"/3.04lb LMB hit I was bringing the grub back as a topwater - great fun! Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 25, 2011 Super User Posted April 25, 2011 5" grubs in the hands of a skilled, knowledgeable angler with a good assortment of terminal tackle is the closest thing to an "all around" bait that will ever exist. The possibilities of rigging and techniques for a grub are practically limited by your imagination only. 1 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 25, 2011 Super User Posted April 25, 2011 my panic box is packed full of them and in line blue fox spinners. when all else fails i throw one of them and its like a light switch fish magicaly start to bite. that or i start out with them and smoke my nephew small mouth fishing in the river. the fat alberts are by far my fav on jigs or chatter baits iv even thrown em on a spot remover jighead and hopped the bottom with it Quote
CSimon2 Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 One of my all time favorite baits. People have laughed at me for sing them only for me to outfish them by quite a bit. My favorite is the 3" BPS triple ripple grub in baby bass. It is killer! Quote
joshholmes Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 you should read mike iaconelli's panic box article. he says his go to baits when all else fails are single tail grubs, 4 inch finesse worms and inline spinners Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 When the bite slows i'll throw a 4" grub on a shakey head. It works and it works good. Some days its the only thing I can catch fish on. Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 are grubs as effective for large mouth as for small mouth? Quote
agssebvtsece Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 are grubs as effective for small mouth as for large mouth? I've had more luck with smallies and grubs then lmb's. Grubs just flat out catch fish and get no respect, which is fine. I love grub trailer's on a jig or spinnerbait. Quote

Super User .ghoti. Posted April 26, 2011 Super User Posted April 26, 2011 Grubs will catch almost anything that swims. In my experience they're better for numbers than size, but big fish will eat them too. I have double sided binder bag just for finesse baits, and it always has 3", 4" and 5" grubs packed, ready to go. Quote
