Super User South FLA Posted April 24, 2011 Super User Posted April 24, 2011 Who here replaces all treble hooks on their lures? If so what brand hooks do you recommend and why? What lures actually have good factory hooks on them? (I like Spro and Lucky Craft's choice for trebles but that is about it) Lastly, what split ring pliers actually work? The one I have has a large tip and cannot get into the smaller split rings without bending split rings out of round. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted April 24, 2011 Super User Posted April 24, 2011 I have been using Daiichi Death Trap trebles for a few years now. They were always crazy sharp until the last box I got. I ordered them from a wholesaler who buys in bulk and reboxes them. I first believed I got the wrong brand hooks but the ones I got were black nickel just like the Daiichi's so maybe I just got a bad batch. I have bought Owner ST-36 trebles at some local shops and they're really sharp hooks. I will probably buy more of those in the future because they are easier to find and just as good as the Daiichi's. As for split ring pliers, dont cheap out on those. Most I've seen are just cheap junk and the tips aren't exactly split ring friendly and end up being more of a pain to use. Get a pair of Texas Tackle Split Ring Pliers, you will thank yourself later. jdw174 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I never replace factory trebles unless they come with really cheap "beak" hooks or those nickel-plated super dull pieces of crap on them. I've used VMC, Mustad TripleGrip, Gammies, and the Excaliburs. No troubles with any of them. Quote

I first believed I got the wrong brand hooks but the ones I got were black nickel just like the Daiichi's so maybe I just got a bad batch. I was told that can happen after I bought a bulk batch of super dull Mustads from eBay. Apparently, they were initially purchased in a single, extremely heavy box with 50,000 hooks and they got a little dinged up. What I purchased and returned was the "bottom of the barrel." My favorites are VMC trebles. They're certainly not the best, but they've a great value at $0.30-0.40 apiece. I'll sometimes touch them up with a diamond file if need be. If I were fishing for money, I would use Owner ST-36. I have a couple packs of those and they are very sticky. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted April 24, 2011 Super User Posted April 24, 2011 i like Owners Stingers. theyre really not that expensive either. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Owner Stinger 36 or Gammi EWG for me. The baits I buy with the exception of SK come with good stock hooks but after some use they get swapped out. Yes, spit ring pliars work. Save your digits and get a pair. Quote

I hear this a lot , but my experience with them has been excellent. I have landed numerous fish and never had a problem. Guess everybody has different experiences. Quote
Canga Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 i replace most of my stock trebles, and i use either owner st-36 or st-41, 36's on smaller or lighter baits, 41's on bigger stuff. and on shorter baits (like smaller shad raps or flicker shads) or baits that come with small hooks (like sebile koolie minnows) i use mustad kvd elites. both oiwners are super sharp, and i love the inline type eye on them. the 41's are a bit beefier which i like on bigger baits as i get alot of pike on them and they dont bend like some other hooks. the mustads are very sharp as well, and the 1x short 1x strong is awesome. Super User Hooligan Posted April 26, 2011 Super User Posted April 26, 2011 I love ST36, hate ST41. I got a huge deal on a large lot of the KVD Elite hook and am trying them this year. So far they're not terrible. My absolute stand-by, though, is the VMC 9650/9651. With those two hooks I can match most anything. I always have at least 24 in sizes 1-6 in my hook box. Quote

Then I take the new stock hooks and replace any worn hooks I may have or use them on baits I don't use regulalry. Quote
