WdyCrankbait Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Hey everybody, I wanted to check and see if anyone else has seen some rust on their 1.5s. I had a tournament last weekend and used them up on the Potomac river. Caught some good fish on it, then put it back in my tackle box. When I got home I opened up the tackle box to let the lures dry out (for a day). Today, I went out again, just beating along the bank and pulled out the KVD to use. The snap ring had rust on it, then the front treble hook had rust on it as well the snap ring. I really like the lures so, I am not trying to bash them, I just thought it was funny for one use. All the other lures I used (crankbaits) I did the same thing with. Used them, put them back in my box then let them air out........no rust. I got some new rings and treble hooks ready to replace them, just curious to see if someone else had this problem Thanks in advance Wdy Quote
kanasbassfisher08 Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 well I just purchased a couple of his 1.5s and i havent used them but i do know this kvd changes all his split rings and hooks on all his baits out of the box so i hope that helps you out... WdyCrankbait Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 Thanks for the information. That makes me wonder....... Quote
Super User slonezp Posted April 24, 2011 Super User Posted April 24, 2011 Thanks for the information. That makes me wonder....... Less expensive hardware=a lower price point. When you're selling to essentialy "every" fisherman an affordable price is very important. If they were only marketing those lures to those of us who have "The Sickness" the pricepoint matters less and quality matters more. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted April 24, 2011 Super User Posted April 24, 2011 The doggone part of it is that the stupid bait works. It works well, as a matter of fact. Anymore, there are only a handful of baits that I don't change at least the hooks, and quite a few that I change both rings and hooks. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 Hooligan, yeah they work pretty well! I caught a good number of fish on my black back/chart. ones. Oh-well, I guess I will just take off the front treble and ring and be done with it. Quote
Chaz Hickcox Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 What's the salinity on your part of the Patomac? Brackish water is hell on a lot of things. Quote
A-Rob Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 haven't used my KVD cranks yet, but I found that my Strike King Pro Model Cranks would rust a bit. I usually swap those hooks as they are rust magnets (not the same as the KVD ones) but eventually the split rings will rust to and I just use them until I need to switch them. Hopefully the KVD one's don't rust that easy?? At least it's fixable with new hooks and rings and they aren't too expensive (except the KVD hooks, they are expensive!) Quote

WdyCrankbait Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 We were fishing Aquia creek. I ended up using plastics the most and not one problem with hooks rusting or anything. Quote
intheweeds Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I have thrown my 1.5 in a couple of ponds around here and have not had a problem with rust. I will be fishing Aquia on Sunday, I will see if I have a rusting problem after that. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 Weeds, yeah definitly let me know. It was raining pretty hard the day I used them, but I also used a lot of other crankbaits longer and no rust has shown up on them. Quote
Chaz Hickcox Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 For the same price you could go with the XCaliburs. I am using those constantly down here in the sounds and have yet to have any rust problems. Lots of fish too. One of the reasons that I don't like SK Crankbaits is they just look like they're cheaply made. Their spinnerbaits are money though. Quote

I have one XCalibur crankbait and it has done surprisngly (I can't spell!!) well! So, good point/reminder! Funny enough the XCalibur I have good success with is a blue back chart sides......hahah Quote
SausageFingers Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 I have a bunch of Strike King cranks, including some of the 1.5's. I havent experienced any of the rusting issues yet. Quote
JacobK Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 This weekend I was fishing and it rained to the point where all of my plano boxes were exposed to rain for about 8hours, got home and they were filled with water. They don't show any signs of rust right now. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted April 26, 2011 Super User Posted April 26, 2011 The Excalibur and KVD aren't even remotely similar to one another in action. The Xcalibur rolls a lot more and has a much wider wobble. It's much better for working slow. The KVD is a tight wiggle with almost no roll to it and can be burned almost as fast as you can reel it without blowing out. Saying that you could use one for the other is apples to pears. Quote
TennesseeShad Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 I fish with them weekly on the TN River system and no rust yet. Quote

Saying that you could use one for the other is apples to pears. You have a point about the action, but honestly the darting and deflection properties, in my experience has been much better with the XCals. Not to say the SK's aren't good baits, I think that was proven in Louisiana, but they're not my personal favorite. I catch a lot of fish on Chart with blue or black back XCS100 or XCS200's, but then again I don't have any SK's in those colors so who knows? With word about the rust issue I don't see myself buying any, my confidence baits just ain't broke. Quote
Jason Penn Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 I've got a couple of the 1.5's and haven't noticed any problems with them. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted April 29, 2011 Super User Posted April 29, 2011 That's sort of my point, in terms of the comparison. There are times that I would use the KVD over the XCS and vice versa. I have several of the XCS that I'm in love with, they catch fish. If you like a square bill that does some funky stuff after deflecting, you might like the KVD. They do skate side to side a lot more when you're moving them at a pretty good clip. The one issue, other than the paint funnies, that I've had with any KVD is the hooks. The hooks are just total crap. I could totally see them rusting on someone after just a day. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted April 30, 2011 Author Posted April 30, 2011 I left out the hook problem I had with the lure. The front treble was bent! Two hooks on the treble hooks were practicaly touching. I had one KVD tied on and using and another one in the BASS nylon bag they send you when you join BASS. I had RC 1.5s in the LC packing right next to the KVD wet and no rust on those hooks. Not sure, someone mentioned ealier about KVD switching out the hooks and swivels, if I got another one I will do that. I like the action of the lures, they preform well. Who knows maybe I got a dud.
