SDoolittle Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 A friend of mine is an avid fly fisherman, and he was telling me about one-fly trout tournaments. In these tournaments, you are only allowed one fly. I don't mean one type of fly, I mean one fly. If you break it off, you're done for the day. If it falls apart, you're done for the day. You can retie as many times as you want, but you must use the same lure all day. This seems like an interesting contest to me. I wonder how many bass fishermen would participate if they were only allowed one lure. It would be interesting to see what baits would be used. Soft plastics would be out for obvious reasons. I'd be too paranoid to bounce a crankbait off wood. On one hand, I'd want to stay away from light line techniques because, well, light line breaks easier. On the other hand, heavy line is often associated with techniques that involve heavy cover. Then again, some guy might win with a limit of dinks he caught before one of them stole his Senko while the rest of the field was fishing safer lures. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted April 23, 2011 Super User Posted April 23, 2011 It would have to be a jig tied to braid. I think any and every other type/style of lure would be a higher risk to lose or damage. Also the jig is the most versatile. It can be fished shallow, deep, in open water, in cover... Quote
BassThumb Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 That would be a lot of fun to participate in. It's a good idea for a small local club tourney. Depending on the season, I would go with either a jig, frog, or heavy spinnerbait. 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted April 23, 2011 Super User Posted April 23, 2011 That would be fun. Like BassThumb, I would use either a spinnerbait or jig, although I would lean towards a spinnerbait. I fish with both a lot, but I went thru at least 30 jigs last season and only lost 1 spinnerbait due to operator error...LOL In the Northeast Forum, we have a topwater only on-line tourney which will start on Memorial Day and end on Labor Day. Maybe, you can do something similar with some members here? Just a thought... Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 24, 2011 Super User Posted April 24, 2011 I would go with Texas rigged plastic…I’m a master at pinning them back together with the hook. I fish some bragging rights tournaments where we are allowed only 1 lure but if you pick a Baby Brush Hogs in watermelon neon that all you can use but as many as you want. We call it a Go To tournament…your Go To lure against mine Quote
agssebvtsece Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Sounds like a great idea. I'd probably choose a spinnerbait or jig or maybe a Rat L Trap. I'd like to say a senko but I think if you hooked up a few fish it would be destroyed. Quote

bigbassctchr101 Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I'd go with a spook or sammy. I know they will catch big and little fish. I probably will not lose it. And I can fish fast, slow, structure, cover, open water, and still be successful. Would definitely get my choice! Quote

How come no one has mentioned elaztech type soft plastics yet? Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Until the sun comes out... How come no one has mentioned elaztech type soft plastics yet? If your only fishing these types of lures in dusk and dawn, your missing out! There is almost ALWAYS a big spook on my deck and it gets casted in all hours of the day/night. Quote
joshholmes Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 i would probably go with a strike king spinnerbait or a rat-l-trap because they can be fished in a variety of conditions. plus i can use braided line with them so ill be less likely to break off Quote
SDoolittle Posted May 25, 2011 Author Posted May 25, 2011 How come no one has mentioned elaztech type soft plastics yet? They may not get torn up as quickly as traditional soft plastics, but they can still get sucked off the hook. Maybe with a drop of super glue? Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 I would go with either a black cavitron buzzbait or a chug bug. I love topwater fishing and catch alot of good fish on these two baits. Also, you dont really have to worry about loosing them. Plus the later in the day, the bigger the fish are going to be on these baits, at least from my experience. Quote
matstone7 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I would also go with the soft plastic like Catt, all you need is 5 fish. As for the jig, seeing as it's a one lure tournament, how is your jig gonna work without a trailer, lol. Quote
RyneB Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I love this concept. Obviously if i saw the layout of the lake first, my decision would be easier made. But if i had to go into it blindly, a white Brovarney baits swim jig with a white Zoom fat albert single tail grub trailer, or a Northstar double willow bluegill spinnerbait. I like my chances with either. I cant imagine the second guessing and self doubt in a tourney like that. The Elite series should do something like this. Quote
Joe D Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 I would go with a Spro frog 65 in red ear, or a 3/8 oz jig Texas craw with 4.20 blk/blue sweet beaver trailer. If you were allowed to use only one lure but replace it if it is damaged ie soft plstics. I would scrap the above and go with a trick worm Joe Quote

And the old Pork Trailer will take some quality fish and has a good chance of making through the day. A-Jay Quote
