st.croix Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I just found one of my old abu garcia ambassadors and I went to line it up and once it became full the right side of the spool had more line then the left side? It's never done this before so I don't know what it could be. It still casts and reels great but I'm annoyed with the uneven line on the spool. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 20, 2011 Super User Posted April 20, 2011 You probably filled while pulling to one side. It won't hurt anything. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Or your worm gear could be sticking...check and see if it pauses on one side when reeling. 2 Quote
dulouz Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I have noticed this a few times, and I think it my problem was that it piles up more where the knot is. Last time I put the knot in the middle, and it is high in the middle. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 That reel has a synchronized level wind that moves side to side when you cast. The reel may also have gotten cranked while off a rod and when remounted, the level wind was not put back where it left off. As stated, it won't really hurt anything, but if you want to fix it, unthread the line including the line guide and pull off line until level. Move the levelwind to the spot infront of where the line is leaving the spool. Rethread the line and crank back onto the spool being sure to not apply side pressure. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 20, 2011 Super User Posted April 20, 2011 One cast puts it back in synch. Otherwise, loosen the drag, and turn the handle while holding the spool until the line guide realigns. Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I've had this happen with dirty a dirty worm gear. The line pawl sticks and does not move equally causing a build up of line on the slower side. Also, the pawl could be worn and not tracking well. You can tighten up the screw on the back and do what the gentlemen above said and it should have you on track. If not, you may need either a good cleaning, or a new pawl! Either way, nothing major. dulouz Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Does it matter on a spinning reel? I have one extra spool that isn't quite right for the reel and it puts more line on the top of the spool than on the bottom. Is that a problem? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 21, 2011 Super User Posted April 21, 2011 You can add a shim in under that spool to help it load more evenly. Quote
dulouz Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 You can add a shim in under that spool to help it load more evenly. It is interesting you mention that, I was looking at a new shimano sedona and it came with shims so you could customize how the line fills the spool. What would be some advantages of having more line at the top or bottom? Also, what would you use to make the shim? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 21, 2011 Super User Posted April 21, 2011 You don't "make a shim," you simply install/remove a nylon washer. Add to shift the bulk of line on the spool to the base, remove to shift it to the lip. I prefer the line to fill evenly on a spinning reel. Quote

Is this some special washer I need to get from shimano or is it something I could find in a hardware store? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 21, 2011 Super User Posted April 21, 2011 You use the washers you mentioned coming with your Sedona. You can also call the reel manu's US service line, and get them. You might be able to find something at the hardware store. Its just a nylon washer - maybe they'd have it. Home Depot has surprised me sometimes...... Quote
Super User .RM. Posted April 21, 2011 Super User Posted April 21, 2011 Is this some special washer I need to get from shimano or is it something I could find in a hardware store? They are called spool washers, (they sit on top of the Spool Support) or clicker. Good Luck & Tight Lines!! Quote

It's never done this before so I don't know what it could be. It still casts and reels great but I'm annoyed with the uneven line on the spool. When I fill my Garcia Round reels, I find that if I do it with the reel rod mounted I have to check to make sure the reel's line carriage is in alignment with the first guide on the rod, or, it will cause the line to stack onto the spool to which ever side the reel is leaning off center on. If I am just holding the reel while re-lining I can control how the line is stacked by turning the reel either right or left slightly while cranking. Just some old fa*ts .02¢ Tight Lines!! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 21, 2011 Super User Posted April 21, 2011 That's a wayyy better description of what I was originally referring to, "reeling to one side." Quote

Home Depot has surprised me sometimes...... Actually I didn't buy a sedona, I was just looking at one in a store. I did pick up a nylon washer at Lowes and after I made the inside hole a bit bigger it was perfect. Thanks for the suggestion. I have another question though, all my other spools are perfect without the washer. Could I glue the washer to the spool? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 22, 2011 Super User Posted April 22, 2011 Hmmmm. I think you want that washer free. When the drag releases, both the washer and the spool are spinning on the shaft. It probably isn't going to cause anything, but glue and reels just don't get along in my head, LOL. Edit.....try Loctite Blue thread locker to hold it to the spool. That way it is removable. Quote
