Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 20, 2011 Global Moderator Posted April 20, 2011 Going down to the pits for a few days the first week of May for a guys fishing weekend to take place of a bachelor party. Anyone fished them recently? I know one of my favorites ones dried up for some reason so I'm kind of starting from scratch. I have time to drive to any of them and I'll be staying in Pittsburg so I'll be fishing several of them I'm sure. I've only fished them early in the year, no later than the first week of April, so any advice would be appreciated! Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 28, 2011 Author Global Moderator Posted April 28, 2011 Thanks in advance! We'll be headed down that way Sunday afternoon, can't wait! Quote
Getfished Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Bluebasser, I am jealous. I have a friend who owns an 11 acre pit a few miles east of Pleasanton. I've been wanting to get down there but I'm too busy. You'll probably get your arm broke down there. Good Luck. Quote

Private pits seem to be were there are way more big fish than the public pits (isn't that always the way it goes?) I've fished the pits around Pittsburg,Columbus, and Scammon a few times but it's always been early in the year and conditions always sucked. Looks like we'll be on the back end of a cold front again this time but maybe with it supposed to be warm and fairly dry during our trip we can find some nice ones that want to play! Numbers usually aren't the problem, it's just finding the big ones that has been tough for me in my trips down there. I know they're there, but I think an unfortunate amount of the ones that get caught never make it back to the water. Quote
ring fry Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 I think I saw y'all heading south on the bypass about 6:15 this morning. SE Kansas grass grower Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 5, 2011 Author Global Moderator Posted May 5, 2011 If you saw a newer model F-150 and an older grey Ford Ranger pulling jon boats then that was us! That would be about the right time too. The weather sucked pretty bad the first couple days but we still did pretty good. We stopped by Bourban State Lake Sunday night on the way down. We caught a ton of fish despite the temps being in the 40's. I had the biggest one at about 4 1/2 pounds on a baby brush hog. We pretty much stuck to the pits you suggested on day one. My friend had the hot hand for the big fish the first day. He caught this 5 1/2 pounder on one of our homemade jigs. He caught another one about 4lbs out of the same pond on the same jig and let my other friend hold it and he held his fish. We went to the trout lake last. Thought with the clear water it might help for the sun not to be high in the sky. There are some giants in that lake! My friend again caught a 5 1/2 pounder on one of our homemade jigs. The fish look amazing out of that pond too! Next day we just winged it a little bit. Caught lots of fish but nothing bigger than about 3lbs. We went to a pit that I had saw the day before that I wanted to try. It was a monster that went on forever. We fished for about half a mile and I was thinking about leaving until a 5lber destroyed my buzzbait. It was on after that and I ended up catching quite a few with my 6 biggest weighing 21lbs 12oz, all on a buzzbait. Last day we headed back north to fish a little closer to home. Stopped and fished Pleasanton City lakes and my friend caught a 4lber on one of our homemade jigs. Despite the cold weather we managed to catch plenty of fish and some really nice ones! All of the fish we caught were released in good condition. Thanks a lot for your help Ring Fry! All of the pits you suggested turned up at least good numbers and some good fish also! Quote
ring fry Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Sounds like y'all had a pretty good trip despite the weather. Glad I could point you in the right direction on a couple pits. SE Kansas grass grower Quote
