I have never heard of this. If they are charging sales tax on line, I won't be ordering from them anymore. Is there no where to get a break anymore??!!

Guess I have to stick with *** and small custom guys. BPS used to be a deal without the tax, now it's like everything else.

They (BPS) aren't charging anyone sales tax, the state is. I'm not sure about other states, but in NY if the store has a brick and mortar retail store within the state, they can and will collect sales tax on online orders.

That's not going to get any better either. Arkansas just passed a law that says any online company doing more than $10k a year in business with Ark residents has to charge sales tax now, regardless if they have a brick and mortar store in the state or not. I hear some online retailers are saying that is illegal, but I doubt that it is.

We all got a break on that for a long time with online sales. But I think that gravy train is coming to an end.

Many states are broke or almost broke; they are looking for any way to increase revenue. Traffic fines are going up, not to increase safety but to increase revenue. Collecting tax on internet sales is simply another way to get more money in the coffers.

I will use a qualifier on my post - I realize there are many good online tackle retailers however I am going to use Tackle Warehouse as an example here as I share an example of purchasing between TW and BPS. Let's say that I purchase a 7ft, 1-piece fishing rod for $50 from BPS. Here is a breakdown of the purchase;

$50.00 for rod

$6.00 up charge for shipping a 1-piece rod longer than 6'

$2.50 tax (Virginia)

$7.50 approximate ground shipping

$66.00 total cost for my $50 rod

If I purchase that rod from TW, the total cost is $50

Bottom line is that it cost me 32% more to purchase that rod from BPS.

Another perk from TW is that for an order of $50 or more there is free ground shipping, $5.00 2nd day shipping and $10.00 next day shipping (on most items).

Just my two cents on this subject.

People who live in CA have to pay sales tax on *** orders. This has nothing to do with store policy and everything to do with state laws. Don't like that a store is charging you sales tax? Go complain to your state gov't.

Technically, ALL purchases made over the internet by NY residents are subject to sales tax. It's in your state tax return.

It used to be a deal to buy online, but with increased shipping and tax now, it's cheaper to buy locally or from small custom guys.

I live in Houston Texas and we have a BPS in Katy Texas which is about 20 miles from where I live. I place online orders with them when I need to get something from them during the week. With the traffic here it would take me two hours on the road to get there and back after work. All of my orders I have placed online ship out of the headquarters in Missouri rather then the Katy store. I get charged sales tax on every order even though it ships from out of state. I wouldn't mind the tax if they shipped it out of Katy and I got it the next day but when I place a order on Monday I don't get it until Friday and I get charged shipping. I didn't know about Tackle Warehouse until I joined this site and I must say I'm impressed with them so far. You cant beat there prices and I don't get taxed from them. I can place an order with them on a Monday and get on Wednesday for only 5 bucks or wait a couple more days and the shipping is free.

Good posts on here. The state is charging you, not the store. Bass Pro would love for you not to have to pay sales tax. That way you can buy 5-10% more stuff. I can order from Bass Pro Shops tax free, but I have to pay sales tax on Cabela's orders because there is a Cabela's in MN.

Thank you for that. It needs to be said.

I thought there was a law passed a year ago to close the sales tax or lack of getting it from online purchases.

Arkansas is NOT going to miss any chance to get tax dollars. I wonder how many other states have a soda pop tax?

Connecticut keeps trying.

John (and others above) is right about out of state sales tax obligations. Many, if not most or all, states place the obligation upon their residents to report and pay sales tax to their own state treasuries on purchases that would have been taxable within their own state but made out of state and not taxed by that state. I'm worried that the federal goverment will decide to get into the sales tax business!

If I wanted an item that was exclusive to a company like BPS, the additional cost in sales tax would not be a deterrent.

Posted

It's not that I minded paying (well, ya I do) but I was caught off guard. Really nothing I buy there is exclusive to them, it's all just normal stuff I can purchase anywhere.

I'm concerned about that, too. It's called a VAT, value-added tax. Proposals are as high as 25% VAT.

The federal govt. decides to put a 25% tax on top of sales tax, and you are going to see an economy based on bartering, and black markets.

I have my finger on the political trigger. Keep it easy :)

The proposals I have heard have a vat tax at 23% in lieu of the federal income tax, state & city sales tax are separate issues. I don't think it will ever happen, to mention the reasons why would be political.

There already is a huge underground economy based on " black market" and cash businesses.

Laws are currently pending to tax all online purchases for states. Get use to it and count your blessings with those companies that currently don't add the tax. It won't be much longer. :(

here in Illinois the law is if there is a store in the state then you pay tax. they are trying to pass a new law where you will pay tax no matter what. how I hate this state.
