I have had the bantam curado for a few years now and have never had a problem. just at the beginning of this year when I got it out I relined it with the same line as all the other years ( 20lb P-Line ) and now when i cast it ( same lures as all the years before ) it gets crazy backlash and balls up with in about 20ft of casting distance. I know its not user error because I have not had problems with it for 3 years until all the sudden? does it need maintenance of any kind or is this caused by some type of component going bad?

try adding light oil in each brake collars. It could be that the collars set on are not sliding thru to slow down the spool rotation

Or it could be that you have oil on the brake drum. Or it could be that you don't have the spool tension knob set like you have in the past. Or you could be out of practice. Maybe a combination of any of the three potential problems - four if you count baluga's.

Hard to tell without seeing it. I'll take your word that its not your error, and suggest breaking it down, cleaning, inspecting for anything broken or out of place and then lightly oil/grease it.

Does it seem like the spool is stopping abruptly on its own, or does it just decelerate a bit too fast? Or, is the backlash coming on the initial acceleration?

I will open it up and make sure everything is clean and running smooth inside. I have never oiled or greased any of my reels tho so what oil/grease should I use?

as far as the spool stopping abruptly, every once in a while when i fling it reel hard it sounds like a bearing or something rubbing when the spool is spinning super fast, but I noticed its more so when I have the drag set tighter. I set the spool tension different for all different weighted baits and have always been fine with it so I know thats not the problem. as far as it accelerating to fast that might be one of the problems because even if I thumb the spool the whole time its spinning it somehow still manages to slowly nest up. I have tried a bunch of different casting methods ( overhand, side arm and under hand ) and its all the same. I guess i'll just start with cleaning up the components and going from there. If all else I will be left with a reason to upgrade to a new one :-)

Have you ever taken it apart and cleaned all the grease out of the bearing and relubed them? I did that with some old Bantam Curados this winter and they cast like they were brand new again. A couple of them were making noise like you were saying and casting distance was terrible, not anymore.

A deep cleaning and proper lube will definetely benefit your reel. They should be done at least annually.

Have you changed rods by any chance? Check to be sure you didn't miss a guide or anything. Make sure each guide ring is intact and clean. If the line is not flowing smoothly it can back up into the spool.

sounds like one of your brake pins is loose. Reach in and see if any pull outwards. That's usually what causes the intermitent starting stopping.

The old 200B's are starting to show some issues. I am starting to see them come into my shop more and more lately. They start screaming during the cast. I have found that at the plastic base of the metal pins that the brake collars ride on is developing cracks. This lets the entire pin move out and drag on the friction ring making a loud squeal during the cast. The only way to fix this is to buy a new spool. This doesn't cause the backlashes you are referring to, it is just something to keep an eye out for. Actually, a couple of drops of oil on the friction ring will actually make the braking system perform better. Just a couple of drops of oil and spread it around with your finger or a q-tip. Also add a drop to the metal pin that the collar rides on. Lastly, put one or two drops on each spool bearing. This will make the system perform as it is supposed to. As far as the backlashing problem you are having, try taking the tension cap off and flipping the small copper spacer that is inside the cap. These spacers will get dented in and cause them to affect the spool tension. Good luck!

flush the bearings with lighter fuel. As they soak, take them out and spin them ocassionally, Then flush them in rubbing alcohol to remove lighter fluid, then let them air dry for a few hours, overnight is good. Make sure to get the super free bearing if its that model of curado. Try a polish on the inside of the pinion gear if you have time, or at least clean it with rubbing alcohol. But the lighter fluid soaking should make it cast better than the day you bought it. hope this helps

You have had the reel over a period of time setting it up almost the same every year or close to it.

The reel over time keeps breaking in and the spool support shims dimple and wear. This year your reel is saying to you that you need to have it service properly, and you should always do a full setup after relining a reel.

Make sure the reel is mounted to a rod, with the proper size line for the rod, and you are throwing the lure weights the rod is rated for..

Turn all brakes off, set the lure drop rate then re-set the brakes. Test cast to see if things change..

Good Luck & Tight Line!! :fishing1:
