Elk River Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Im not a seasoned bass fisherman, mainly a trout man. When can I start trying topwater. Thanks for any advice I receive. Quote
s13john Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 im throwing a horney toad tomorrow, ill let you know. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I am usually on the early side of fishing topwater. But, I would rather be early then miss the topwater bite. Try it and see. Quote
bass or bass ? Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I throw topwaters anytime, but I'm in Arizona. Don't just limit your topwater fishing to early morning and late evening, I've caught fish on the surface anytime of day or night. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I absolutely HAMMERED them on Monday. Water temp 48 degrees, throwing a 7" MS Slammer. It was one of the best days I've had in a long long time. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I throw top waters any time I can. As long as the water is not frozen I have gotten bites. Usually I get a few blow ups when the water is below 50. But I have a feeling a few might be pike. I have had small mouths go after them in early April. Not sure on the water temp in early April. But It cant munch more then 40 degrees. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted April 21, 2011 Super User Posted April 21, 2011 The topwater action really heats up when the water temps hit the 50's, but what the heck, just start trying it whenever, and maybe be surprised with a big ole topwater blowup! Fish are funny sometimes, and they break their own rules. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I'll normally start throwing alot of topwater during post-spawn. The males are up shallow guarding fry and will absolutly crush a chug bug or frog sometimes. Also, you can get some big girls mixed in too. I will throw topwater from April-October. Quote
zach t Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Top water is, by far, my favorite method of fishing. However, I havn't had enough bites on Guntersville or Wheeler to start being confident with it. This year has been different than previous years for me, because i USED to get bites on top water regardless. This year, I have caught 1 fish on top water. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted April 21, 2011 Super User Posted April 21, 2011 I have already caught over 100 fish on topwater this year! Of course it is my favorite way to fish, and the first hour and last hour of every day is dedicated to throwing topwater! Most of my fish have come on the old faithful devil's horse! Jeff Quote
Fat-G Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I've gotten some pre-spawn on a Spro Frog this year. Once the dogwoods bloom and the pollen mats up in the corners of the lakes, it's topwater time. Quote
EastTexasBassin Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I started catching topwater fish at the end of January, and I'll keep doing so until the beginning of December. Quote

Jeff No topwater on Guntersville yet and already caught 100 in TN on topwater...wacky season so far here. The usual cadence of things has been off kilter here in Southern Arkansas / North Louisiana seems like to me. I've even heard something about the Tsunami causing things to off. Hoping to start catching a few late on spook types soon but not much to speak as of yet....Yellow Magic should usually starts popping in May around these parts. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted April 22, 2011 Super User Posted April 22, 2011 90% of my fishing so far this year is on a naturally spring fed 20 acre pond. It's max depth is about 15 feet and averages about 7. So the topwater bite is on almost every morning and evening, so its a little unfair to compare my topwater success to somewhere like Guntersville! Jeff Quote
Chaz Hickcox Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Depends on the water you are in. If the fish are shallow <4ft then it doesn't matter. Any deeper I'd wait till high 50's low 60's. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Caught my first buzzbait fish 3 weeks ago on the potomac. within 3 casts-2 lbr. 57 degree water. Over the newly growing weeds. Black 1/4 oz red blade Quote
