Jim McC Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 Do you guys use braided line on your reels when you re-tie a lot(change lures often)? If so, what do you use to cut the line? I'm asking because I don't use a swivel, I direct tie to the lure. Thanks. Quote
Super User Marty Posted April 17, 2011 Super User Posted April 17, 2011 I use snaps, but that's neither here nor there. I cut braid with Fiskar's Kid's scissors, which are widely available. Quote
BassThumb Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I like a fresh, sharp pair of toenail clippers for nylon lines, and Rapala serrated superline scissors for braid. Quote

Super User grimlin Posted April 18, 2011 Super User Posted April 18, 2011 I'm in agreement with scissors here as well.I also carry a small sharp pocket knife.Just in case I forget the scissors. Toenail clippers work really well for mono and fluorocarbon. I still struggle with braid. One reason why I really like the 2handee cutters. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted April 18, 2011 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted April 18, 2011 I bought a 2 pack of kindergarten scissors from Walmart for $1.50 or so about 5 years ago. I keep one in the boat and 1 in my tackle box. Other "specialty" cutters have come and gone (xmas presents and such)and the cheap scissors are still there working perfectly. Quote
Red Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I use a good sharp pocket knife. It is readily available in my pocket and I also keep one in my tackle box. 1 Quote

Jim McC Posted April 18, 2011 Author Posted April 18, 2011 Thanks guys. I thought you needed special scissors to cut these lines. It still sounds like too much trouble though, if you frequently re-tie. I'll stick to my mono and my teeth. I do use braided line on my heavier rod that I use for northerns, but I keep a swivel on there. Quote
Super User Marty Posted April 18, 2011 Super User Posted April 18, 2011 Do you use snaps on all types of lures or just certain types? Everything. There is always a snap on my line, stemming from laziness and a tendency to change lures more often than some others might. Anticipating some disagreement here, I have never lacked confidence with the snap. A Senko wiggles on the way down, a crankbait wobbles, a worm tail flutters, etc. Quote
A-Rob Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I use some scissors I got for $2. They work best with some tension on the line. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted April 18, 2011 Super User Posted April 18, 2011 My Ross pliers have carbide cutters that cuts braid. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 19, 2011 Super User Posted April 19, 2011 i agree with marty on the snap with braid. Quote
dulouz Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 i agree with marty on the snap with braid. Jigs and spinnerbaits too??? Quote
shutupnfish Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I've been using a Ronson wind-resistant butane lighter the last couple of trips. Yeah, you gotta be careful not burn your finger or the line. But it's always "sharp." Steve Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 20, 2011 Super User Posted April 20, 2011 Jigs and spinnerbaits too??? i buy spinnerbaits with closed ties so i can use them with a snap.jigs are fine.i use a berkley cross lock snap.if they aren't scared of the brush guard they sure aren't scared of a small snap.what convinced me is i have a friend who does the same and even when i fished flouro on my home lake which is really clear most of the time ,he got just as many bites fishing powerpro with a snap.being as i fish from a rowboat i can't really have more than 4 setups without loosing them overboard so a snap helps a lot.your braid also lasts forever. I like the sound of that. I fish from shore and usually only have few rods, and I change lures a lot. I have felt bad about wasting braid when I retie. Regarding the spinnerbaits, I remember seeing something in a recent magazine about how to use leaders for musky/pike fishing on spinnerbaits. The trick, if I remember correctly, was to place a peice of plastic tubing over the tie to keep the snap on the leader from coming off. Thanks for the advice! Quote

Jim McC Posted April 21, 2011 Author Posted April 21, 2011 I've used closed end spinnerbaits with snap swivels, but they don't seem to run vertical. They come in sideways and what not. I don't have this problem when I tie directly to the spinnerbait. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 21, 2011 Super User Posted April 21, 2011 I use a duolock with spinnerbaits, no question that the snap does not stay centered, but a quick jiggle and your back in business. For the convenience of a snap a jiggle now and then is no big deal for me. Quote

Thanks for the heat shrink idea. This month's bassmaster had a tip to use o-rings and I was going to try it but my local hardware store had them for $.23 a piece. So I got a bunch of heat shrink tubing for a couple of dollars. One 4" piece took care of all my spinnerbaits. Thanks again! Quote
