Ok guys fished a club tourney yest. @ Lake Jordan and broke another Veritas (3 total since using) It was th 7'3" model. Broke on hookset. well I am wanting to get away from the Veritas on my Jig and plastics rods. What I am asking is for suggestions on a good $160 or less TOUGH rod. I cant afford anything more expensive than that since with the economy and it being tourney season money is tight. I will need one rod for pitching jigs (Northstar) 1/2 and 3/8 oz. And one rod for pitching and flipping 3/8-3/4 oz creature baits. Any suggestions???

You might want to take a look at the Powell MAX series ($139) or the Duckett Rods ($159). The Duckett will be the lighter of the two. The Powell is a very nice stick as well. I've read quite a few complaints of the Veritas snapping to the point that I'm not sure I'd trust one.

I am also looking really closely @ the Dobyns savvy series too.

Check these out:

They're advertised as being virtually indestructable. I bought one earlier this year because I wanted to try out the microguides without spending a fortune. It's probably the cheapest rod in my arsenal, and it's becoming one of my favorites. The handles in the pictures are from last year's models. The 2011 rods have split grips.

Pick up a used Loomis. They can be had in that range.

also looking at avids. oh decisions decisions

You could get a used Loomis MBR844 IMX for that price if you keep an eye out. It's a very popular rod for bottom contact baits, and it's higher quality than the others mentioned.

i have an avid (though its a 6'3" mxf spinning rod for vertical jigging walleye) and it is an very very nice rod, sensitive, light weight, comfortable in hand, good balance with the reel i have on it, and i love the lifetime warranty st croix has, as well as the ability to upgrade to a legend series later is awesome.

I saw that. There have been a few available recently.

With all due respect, I suggest that you take a look at your rod handling practices. It's very unlikely that you have had three faulty rods. Today's high modulus graphite rods are light and sensitive, but the trade off is a level of brittleness. Avoid actions that flex the rod tip beyond 90* and be very conscious of avoiding nicks, scratches and dents.

I totally agree but the first one was broken during shipping so that one doesnt count. I have broke two and my friend has broke two. All I know is I have been fishing for years and never broke a rod until I started using the Veritas. I have not changed my technique at all. I WILL NOT put all blame on the rods because its not the right thing to do I might have something to do with it but regardless I am gunshy and hve no confidence in the rods anymore.

All these light-weight (i.e. thin walled), ultra-high modulus rods are going to be susceptable to breakage upon side impact. This is irrespective of brand (Avid, Dobyns, Shimano, etc...) If dropped/banged around and the cross section is compromised (i.e. nick, dent in the side wall), they will break upon hookset. It's the price you pay for sensitivity and lightweight.

Amazon has a bunch of Lamiglas Certified Pro's for $125-$170. Just a heads up.

Lamiglas makes a nice rod... Used Loomis or other high end rod is a treasure at the right price. I picked up a Loomis GLX last year and its my favorite rod.

I own 3 avids and love them....And also the warranty is awesome....Although I think my next rod will be a Dobyns....I think you would be happy with either

I have two Powells and love them. If I was buying a new rod it would be between a Dobyns and Powell. I wuold buy one of each, see how you like them and then buy the third one based on your experience with the two. Cant go wrong either way tho.

I would go with the Avid, outstanding rods imo. By the way watch that you're not leaving your rods in extreme heat such as in the cab of a truck or car on hot days, this could cause problems also.

My fishing partner broke his 7'3 veritas as well. I have the 7'6 with no issues to this point. Wonder if it's just the 7'3 model. Hmmmmmmmm..........

I have four Lamiglas Excel rods, never had any issues yet, and I am pretty rough on my gear. Will save you a couple bucks as well.
