Hard for me not to go with GSP.

Posted

Shields is going to have to get very lucky to catch a bigger, faster, stronger Georges St. Pierre in a submission. That's the only way he can win. GSP is a master of neutralizing his opponents strengths and not falling into their gameplan. Look at his last two fights, he fought a good striker(Hardy) and forced him to do nothing but grapple, and then fought an elite wrestler(Koscheck) and forced him to box, literally breaking his face in the process.

GSP has been my favorite fighter for years now, and I've seen Shields fight a few times. He has a great pedigree, Strikeforce champ, Shooto champ, hasn't lost in 5 or 6 years, recently dominated Dan Henderson to take the Strikeforce title, etc. But these are second rate organizations when compared to the current UFC talent monopoly. Look no further than Nick Diaz. He washes out of the UFC with a decent record, having never fought a top 10 fighter, then goes to Strikeforce and completely dominates for years. What does that tell you?

GSP looks like the best welterweight of all time, and he's in his prime and getting better. I think he's going to keep the fight standing and try to outstrike Shields in the clinch, in a Randy Couture dirty boxing kind of way. It's going to be a long night for Jake Shields. GSP is arguably better than him in literally every aspect of MMA.

GSP by TKO in round 4.

GSP by TKO in round 4.

I can only hope. He hasn't finished off an opponent since he fought Sera the second time back in 08 and took him out with knees to the body while on the ground. I'm not counting the TKO to BJ since that was a corner stoppage between rounds. GSP has had too many decesions to still have the nickname "Rush". He'll always be one of my favs & weather he gets the TKO or the decision I think he will dominate the entire fight. Shields has called out GSP for years, now is his chance to prove himself.

Very true. GSP has taken a lot of flak over the last couple years by not finishing fights. Lately, he's begun to remind me of how Ali was at times, where he would just outclass opponents and rack up the points so he could win an easy decision.

GSP has been trying to improve his striking to overcome what is becoming a bad reputation for being a point fighter who relies on wrestling too much. Lately he's been training with Brazilian Muay Thai legend, Cosmo Alexandre.

I expect a big time performance from GSP in front of a record setting crowd of 55,000 in Toronto.

I agree with earlier comments. GSP is a master at taking away his opponents strengths and exploiting their weaknesses. I thought the Koscheck fight was going to be closer, but GSP picked him apart.

Shields might be well rounded, but GSP is easily the most well rounded fighter in the UFC.

I was thinking that Koscheck was gonna upset GSP. Stylistically, he had a great chance to do it if he could get GSP to the ground, becasue I think he could have kept him on the ground. Instead his orbital bone was broken in the first 3 minutes of the fight and he ended up looking like Rocky. That clearly made him throw out his game plan. I think it would have been closer otherwise.

Personally, I think it's a crock that nobody stopped that fight, even though Kos clearly wanted to keep going. Even if it was a title fight, they have to take the fighter's safety into account, first and foremost. His corner could have thrown in the towel or the athletic commission in Montreal could have stopped the fight at any time. It was pretty clear from the mid-point that Josh wasn't gonna take that fight. Look at the guy.

Funny thing is GSP never had a wrestling career, but has turned into a very formitable wrestler (MMA wise). When he coached the Ultimate Fighter they showed that olympic wrestler he brought into his camp. Basically, GSP is a outstanding athlete by any standards.

A fight with GSP and Anderson Silva would be epic. Sonnen exposed Silvas weakness, wrestling. Silva has freak skills though and prevailed. If he ever fought GSP, it could possibly be the best and most anticipated matchup in the history of MMA.

Part of me would love to see a Silva/GSP fight, but I don't know if it will ever happen. I think GSP would get wrecked, and I don't really want to see that. What would it prove? The bigger man would likely win, and the UFC's golden boy would get his reputation tarnished. That's the point of weight classes to begin with, to limit size advantages. There have been a lot of reports that they're working it out, but Dana White says it's not so. Who knows?

If it were to happen, I think it would have to be at a 180 lb catch weight. I don't know if Silva can drop to 170. They say he already cuts a ton of weight to make middleweight at 185, and that he walks around at about 205-210, so he's a natural light heavy weight. GSP is a natural welterweight and apparently doesn't cut much weight at all. I think it's more likely that Silva will go UP in weight that go down. There are a lot more appealing fights if Silva goes up than if he goes down in weight. Machida, Shogun, Rampage, Rashad, Bones Jones, etc.

Silva/Bones. Now THAT would be a great fight!

GSP and Sheilds is going to be a leg humping fest, GSP needs to go back to finishing fights, right now I can't stand watching him fight, he has no desire to finish he is just fighting to not lose, he needs to fight to win.

I agree that Jake's only chance to win is to catch GSP in a submission. He definitely has the best BJJ in the 170 division. He has submitted guys that have beaten GSP on the ground. I hope Jake comes into this fight with better cardio.

GSP will wins this by controlling how to fight goes, hopefully he can finish this fight and not win by a decision.

Disappointing title fight. The Machida/Couture fight was one of the best finishes in years. It's a must see. Looked just like The Karate Kid.

For those that haven't seen it, here they are.

The Aldo-Hominick fight was a great fight IMO. Also, did you see the prelim they showed after the GSP fight? Brutal spinning back fist(or whatever you call it)!

Posted

I've only seen the two fights I posted. I'm gonna watch them all at some point today before the vids are taken down.

As great and dominant as GSP is, he is boringly over cautious. He is very good though. On the otherhand, Shields didn't pressure him and was cautious also IMO.

Hominick got beat in the early rounds and came on strong in the end. He had a HUGE goose egg on his forehead!!!

All in all it was a pretty good PPV.

I just watched the two posted in the earlier post. Good stuff. Joe Rogan cracked me up after the Machida kick. "That's the crane technique, no can defend" Anyway, thanks for the links.

No problem. I love that site.

That was a great line. Joe Rogan is a really funny guy and a great asset to the UFC, despite some of the earlier stuff he's done in his career, like Fear Factor. He's actually an accomplished martial artist in Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

From a bio:

"Within two years, Rogan had earned a black belt and went on to become the Massachusetts Full Contact Tae Kwon Do champion four consecutive times. At the age of 19, he won the US Open Tae Kwon Do Championships and, as the lightweight champ, went on beat both the middle and heavy weight title holders to take home the Grand Championship."

Cool, I had no idea he was a fighter himself. I believe he also does/did stand up comedy.

I didnt get to watch the GSP Shields fight but I also didnt think I'd miss much. GSP, as great as he is, has gotten very very boring in the cage. He can stand and throw or roll with whoever they put him against but he's become almost too finesse and I just dont like watching his fights anymore. He's at the point where he wants to take as little damage as possible and just 'out-point' someone to death to win. Thats an intelligent plan for a fighter but it really sux for the fans.

He's got all the tools, he just doesnt take them out of his toolbox anymore.

Agreed. Even when he dominated Koscheck it was very boring. Jab, jab, another jab..... Anderson Silva knows how to finish at least.

Saw this quote on twitter

" GSP does not know how to win, but he sure knows how not to lose "
