kbkindle Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 What size circle hook do you guys like. Iam useing a owner circle hook 1/0 with a zoom trick worm. our fish here on my lakes are mostly green fish, and fish a lot of docks, boat lifts. so i have to skip these baits under them. They say dont set hook just sweep it.under these docks and lifts there is a lot of metal piping and angle arms.I can hook these fish but getting them out of this mess is another story. So i blame the hook. and sugestions may be iam useing the wrong size hook Quote

So i blame the hook. and sugestions may be iam useing the wrong size hook The hook isn't a factor once the bass are hooked inside the mouth. If you're having issues getting the bass out from underneath the dock after hooking them, a more powerful rod is what you need. I mostly use a 7' MH/F spinning rod for dock skipping. When I go with medium power spinning rods, I sometimes have problems getting the bass out before they wrap the line around something and tear the hook free. A lot of it has to do with what angle you choose for your skip. With spinning tackle, I try not to skip over any metal if I don't have to. Quote
whoopbazz Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 1/0 is fine. Personally i use a size 1 mosquito hook. But have used a 1/0 on some bigger wacky baits. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 18, 2011 Super User Posted April 18, 2011 When dock fishing, that fish has to be comming out from under the dock and to you almost the instant you set the hook. If you give them any room to move, they will go where you can't get them and game over. IMHO docks are no place for wimpy tackle, MH or H powered rods, braided line or heavy fluorocarbon are a must. Light line and underpowerd rods lead to heart ache around docks. I use a MH spinning rod with 30 lb braid to skip light weight baits, weightless plastics and other smallish stuff, and a MH or H casting rod with 17 lb fluorocarbon or 50 lb braid to pitch, flip, or skip jigs, t-rigs, frogs, etc..... I would dump the circle hook too. Get a hook that you can set hard, because the hard hook set is part of getting that fish turned and heading out. Quote
A-Rob Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I like 1/0. I've even used a 2/0 hook and even little bass didn't care. But I usually go 1/0. I think some hooks are thin wire for this application and may straighten on you when fishing structure. It is good/bad b/c you may lose a fish...but you can unsnag your lure if stuck on a dock pile haha. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 18, 2011 Super User Posted April 18, 2011 I have been using the owner wacky rig hooks in 1/0 & 2/0 for 5" senkos. Very good hooks with a green finish. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 19, 2011 Super User Posted April 19, 2011 This is the one I use regularly: Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 24, 2011 Super User Posted April 24, 2011 I may be in the minority here, but I have not found need (yet) for any hook over 1/0. In fact, the majority of my catches (2-6lb LMB) are on #2 hooks! And that's using 4" and 5" Senkos and Dingers. I like #2, but also use #1 and #4 depending on the situation. I've only bent out hooks on snags, never hauling in a fish. Huge salmon are caught using tiny egg hooks all the time. Yeah, salmon are not bass, but ... I saw no reason I couldn't downsize with bass, too. So far so good! Again, my opinion. I keep line taught, don't have to adjust drag during fight and even haul them up in timber and slop. And the majority of this is on a 5'9" Shimano Compre with a 1000FI Stradic! I agree that you need to set the hook quickly and get them out of the dock ASAP, and probably a MH rod is a good idea. My rod has an XF tip, 10lb PowerPro braid with a 6-10lb leader (P-Line Floroclear 6-8lb mist green, Seaguar Red FC 10lb, Yo-Zuri Hybrid 8 lb). Circle hooks are "okay", but I have NEVER gut hooked a bass wacky or drop shotting. I use circle for other fish.... I love the aforementioned Owner Wacky (in #2) http://goo.gl/cpU52 (Bass Pro short link), but prefer Gammy #1, #2 Split Shot/Drop Shot hooks, and am currently testing the Gammy Finesse Wide Gap in #1. I might downsize to #2. To each his own. This is what works for me. I don't fish around a lot of pipes, so based on that, previous advice to use braid + a good FC leader is a decent idea. My .02. Super User Hooligan Posted April 24, 2011 Super User Posted April 24, 2011 Most DS and wacky plastics are fine in the 2-2/0 range. I've not really found anything that can't be done in that range. Currently I'm in love with the Gamakatsu Wicked Wacky. Oddly, they hook nothing like a Kahle or Circle. The eye position makes a huge difference, as such the hook really tends to act more like a traditional "J" hook on the set. That's not saying that you need to power set them, but they don't need a slow sweeping set, like a circle, either. I'm really, really, really liking these hooks so far, and I can only see that increasing. The only size I've used thus far is 1/0 I see no reason to change that. Quote
A-Rob Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I like the wide gap finesse hooks like gamakatsu makes (same sizes as above, 1/0, 2/0) Quote
