WdyCrankbait Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Hey everyone, Got a quick question. I have a bass tournament this Saturday on the Potomac and the grass is suppose to be coming up. I recently got some baby brush hogs for finesse fishing in the tourny. Well, I thought about also using them weightless with say a 3/0 hook as topwater over grassbeds, lily pads once they come out. Has anyone done this with success? I was fishing a baby brush hog just now to see how it would look. Nothing using it on topwater, not surprised still a little early. But, when I jigged it off the bottom, hooked up with a small bass. He got off, super happy he got off (I want to that luck out of my system before Saturday), also he would not have measured so........... Thanks Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted April 14, 2011 Super User Posted April 14, 2011 I'm sure they'd work, but something like a Zoom Ultra vibe worm would be a better choice. Quote
hmongkidBee Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Throw a weightless fluke or sluggo type lure. That would be your best bet. I would suggest if you wanted to, throw a crankbait that will barely tick the tops of the grass. Quote
Fat-G Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Forgot to mention, Rage Shad would be your best best. Quote
WanderLust Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Smokin' Rooster or Eeliminator would be my choice. Quote
OHIO Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Don't know about Brush Hogs, but I wacky rig Senko type baits and fish them on top. They work pretty well. Quote
JaxBasser Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Zoom Fluke over the top of grass = amazing. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted April 15, 2011 Author Posted April 15, 2011 THanks everyone. I have the flukes and other lures mentioned I just thought it would be a good change up the bass had not seen before. Quote
Flangler Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 I've also had luck with Senkos or imitations weightless. Works very well! Quote
VolFan Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 To answer your question, I've used the regular sized SK Game Hawgs as topwater over the grass, and they do very well. The Ragetail Spacemonkey also does well, but has a little more agressive action if there's some chop or overly thick weeds. Weightless works well, but a light keel-weighted hook works better as it keeps the bait from spinning/turning over a little better and keeps it just down a little in the water. Quote
