First of all, welcome to the forum and to the sport! :D

As for your "situation" could you provide a little more detail? Things like water temp (might be tough to get from shore though), recent weather/future forecast, water clarity, vegetation (surface and underwater), visible cover, etc... With some of that information I'm sure the people here can help you out with some good suggestions. As far as I've seen in your post, however, I'd say you should be using what your friends were using ;)

Well you can start by reading the "FISHING ARTICLES" on the upper left hand corner of the page , then ask questions about what you don't understand and by the way WELCOME to BR.

Sounds like your friends had it figured out.....ask them to take yall shoppin.

This.

Seeing it work, trying it out and having it work for yourself is the ultimate confidence builder.

Welcome to this addicting sport. Watch out for the bait monkey! He gets us all at some point. In pond fishing I love throwing weightless 7" ribbontail worms on a 3/O gamakatsu ewg hook. If it's windier I'll but on a 1/8 oz bullet. But as everyone else has said ask your friends to take you shopping and suggest some good lures.

Your friends caught more because they covered the entire water column.

Your worms and soft plastics are great for slowing down and picking apart an area with repeated casts. Also, using plastics such as lizards and brush hogs are great this time of year due to the spawn.

Jigs can be fished slow just as well as soft plastics, and they offer a larger profile. If you present your jig with a craw trailer, then fish it like a crayfish scooting along the bottom of the pond. You can also put a grub or other soft plastic on as the trailer and swim it, also known as "the swim jig".

Crankbaits are just plain effective. If you're getting into the sport, you are going to want to pick up a few different models. Shallow runners, medium divers and deep divers. Stay natural with your color choices...sounds like trout patterns would be a great start.

Without knowing the gear you're using, your probably not using the "best" fit rod for all presentations. If you can tell us the "writing" on the underside of your Abu Garcia rod, we could tell you which presentation is best suited for that particular rod.

Good show buddy. Next you might want to get some rattle-traps (if it's not too snaggy), a few spinnerbaits, and a couple of topwater poppers. If nothing is working, pick up a bag of GY senkos or a bag of GY Fat Ikas and fish them slowly.

Zoom super flukes are always a versatile bait to have! They can be fished like top water, or weightless below the water. They are great around lily pads, and grass. I usually use a 3/0 off shank hook. You can also add a jig head to them if you like!
