SmokeRise1 Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 The answer to everything is 42.... DONE! So long, thanks for all the fish. Quote
Nine Miler Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 presented like you did in the title it's 288 once you've completed the parenthesis its just basically 48/2*12, since multiplication and division are both equal importance you go left to right and do whichever comes first, 48/2 = 24, 24*12=288 only way it would be 2 is if presented to you like 48/(2(9+3)) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted April 16, 2011 Super User Posted April 16, 2011 The answer is 2. You have to clear the parenthesis first. 48/2(9+3)= 48/2(12)= 48/24= 2 Quote
nick76 Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Since I am not a betting man, but would be willing to answer.......my lack of defined math skills tells me the answer is 288. You have to clear the (9+3) first to make 12. Then you have to work left to right to clear the remaining actions since Division and Multiplication are equal. 48/2= 24. 24x12= 288. Best of my knowledge from my college days. Maybe having a beer or two would bring back any old missing memories. Quote
SimonSays Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 The answer is 288. Final answer. Want proof? Google Wolfram Alpha Plug it into Mathematica, Matlab, C, C++, PHP, Perl, Ruby, Excel etc etc etc Without the proper parenthesis you have to use the order of operations which is done left to right. This is also why mathematicians developed parenthesis! no ambiguity! Quote

Super User Root beer Posted April 17, 2011 Super User Posted April 17, 2011 Please Excused My Dear Aunt Sally. I got 288, too. Quote
tyrius. Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 The answer is 2. You have to clear the parenthesis first. 48/2(9+3)= 48/2(12)= 48/24= 2 Nope. It's 48/2(12)=24(12)=288 Left to right with multiplication and division. Quote
