Okay, so there are 2 answers to this, 288 and 2. but which is correct?

288=(48/2)*(9+3)

2=48/((9+3)*2))

its PEMDAS vs. BEDMAS

I say 2. Take out the (9+3) and rewrite it as 48/2X. You'd get 2.

if you did that you would get 2x, then you would put the (9+3) back in and get 288. Its hard to the correct answer, I suppose they both are correct depending on which way you look at it or which way you learned it.

Not if you solve (9+3) to get 12. Then substitute 12 for x. When x=12, 2x= 24. 48/2x=2.

If it was written as 48/2*(9+3) then i would say 288. That's how i learned it.

It's been a long time, but were it written 48/2X(9+3) you'd have a dilemna. But, when you have 2(9+3), it is treated as a single number, in this case, 24. If memory serves when you have a number followed directly with a calculation in parentheses, you do that calculation, and put the result into the equation.

It would boil down to this:

__ 48 __

2(9+3)

The nine plus three gets multiplied by 2, not the result of 48 divided by two.

It's PEMDAS. The answer here is going to be determined by how the problem was presented to you:

48

---- (9+3) = 288

2

or

48

-------- = 2

2(9+3)

presented like you did in the title it's 288

once you've completed the parenthesis its just basically 48/2*12, since multiplication and division are both equal importance you go left to right and do whichever comes first, 48/2 = 24, 24*12=288

only way it would be 2 is if presented to you like 48/(2(9+3))

It has been quite sometime since I have been in school but based on the equation presented it would be 288 based on my experience. Is 2 New Age Math?

Okay the people who are getting 288 are using BEDMAS (Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction)

And those who are getting 2 are using PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction)

Both are the same. What you seem to be missing is that multiplication and division are weighted the same. Meaning you do what comes first in the equation not what comes first in the acronym. This also applies with addition and subtraction.

It's more like...

BEDMAS (Brackets, Exponents, Division or Multiplication, Addition or Subtraction)

PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication or Division, Addition or Subtraction)

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally :P

I was always taught to multiply first, then do division.

Simon's right. If the division operator is first in the formula then you divide first. Addition and subtraction are the same weight and multiplication and division are the same weight so between those whichever is to the left is done first.

Alright well that makes a lot of sense, a friend and I were having conflicting thoughts on this and of course neither of us would give in and say one is correct. I never thought of the whole weighted thing.

Both are correct if you ask me.

But then I have to stand in the shower to count to 21.

Ok, Ok...lets put this into words we can all understand.

Jordan Pier wants .ghoti. to make him 9 swimbaits. .ghoti. charges $48 for 2. The next day Jordan Pier calls .ghoti. and asks him to make three more. How much will .ghoti. charge Jordan Pier (minus shipping and handling)?

Heres a hint. It's not 2
