Hey everybody. I am fishing my first night tournament this coming saturday, which will be my first night tournament. Can anyone give me some info on the best lures to use at night?

Honestly, I have fished a lot of night tournaments and the same baits that work during the day work at night. 7 & 10" black worms, black jigs, black blue flake wacky senkos, poppers, all white buzzbaits, shad colored spinnerbaits and crankbaits.

Not easy, but like normal fishing

Yup, without the luxury of being able to see of course.

Darkness covers up an angler’s presence and most of all his mistakes. Fish don’t feed as regularly at night as they do in the day but when they are feeding, it’s far less of a problem to catch them.

Night fishing areas: I normally fish the same areas fished during the day with one exception; night lighted areas. Lighted docks, lighted boat ramps, a row of camps with lights along the bank or a single camp with a light near the water.

Shallow verses deep water: I have not noticed a distinct advantage one way or the other. I will normally fish both areas thoroughly staying with the one that produces the best results. However shallow water does offer a greater opportunity to use different baits.

Not being able to see to me is a huge advantage in that it makes one concentrate on the lure more and less of external distractions.

Black Jointed Jitterbug. I have caught more bass at night with this than everything else combined. To the point that its all I bring when I go night fishing.

Just to clarify, by easy i meant not having to go buy a ton of new baits to use for night and not having to find new places to catch fish. lol I know the tournament fishing at night isnt going to be easy.

I was told fish dark lures at night, that way the fish can look up and see the difference between the sky. Not sure, never fished a night tournament. GOOD LUCK!

Bass can see color but not at night, color it’s self is meaningless at night. Bass cannot see details at night, so don’t waste time with meticulously painted or patterned lures. Contrast is more important by far than color at night.
