What's with the "reputation" that I'm guessing, somehow is a rating system of the members? Who, or what determines an individual's rating? I've searched around the forum, including searching the forum using the word reputation, and it comes up empty.

While I'm asking about the reputation thingy, what's with the "neutral" that is beneath the reputation score?

I think it has something to do with the +1 and -1. I'm giving you +1 because I've been wondering the same thing.

OK, now, after much perusing, I see the green plus and the red minus. I've seen similar on other forums and they usually turn into a bone of contention, or amusement. One in particular, which was a political forum allowed you to rate posts from one to five stars.

You either got one star, or five stars. One from those who held opposing views regardless of the merits of the post, and five from your buddies who were on the same side of the fence, again without regard to the merit of the post, which could range from the ridiculous to the sublime.

The rating was done without a thought to the actual value of the post, or whether it was coherent, or just a rant.

I think you are supposed to use it as a way of confirming that you like a certian post(much like the old way of quoting and then saying x2) the more post that people agree with the more your reputation builds. Then after a while you will be that old man at the fish store that everyone asks for advice from cause he has the best "reputation". Yes it can be misused but lets hope that doesn't happen ....As far as the neutral, i would imagine it will change as you get more reputation(or less), kind of like the old post count with junior senior member etc, but i am just guessing on that.

That was the first thing I thought of, Ima Bass Ninja, that it would get misused. You can get a negative reputaion just by some members (friends) joking around with that feature. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

Looks like each BR member gets a quota of negative votes per day.

That may prove to be a good idea.

I think it's a good idea. That way we can tell what's good and what's not.

Weed out the stupidity.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions whether others agree or not. I care less what my or your reputation number is.

I should give you the green plus for that answer, but I should give you a red minus just to be a wise guy. Since I cannot determine the wisest decision, I'll do neither.

I will say that the deck is stacked in favor of the positive responses since you can show approval more times than disapproval.

Edit: It would be like going to the polls on election day and finding that you could vote for 50 democrats, but only one republican, or vice versa to be sure no one infers that to be a political statement.

Jeez Rhino I hadn't even noticed until you mentioned it. Now I am going to have a complex.. "did I get a positive, or a negative?" I might actually need therapy after this to correct my lack of self esteem.

In Fact, I am going to have my mom file a lawsuit against the keyboard company for causing me pain and anguish over what to type all while not eating a peanut butter sandwich and drinking cold coffee from McDs. Decaf of course because adding too much sugar may make me obese....... :)

It seems that on some forums, many people's sole intent while skimming the posts is to give ratings, no matter how trivial the post was. The Minneapolis Star Tribune is a prime example of this. It's good to see that so far people on BR are only giving ratings when they feel strongly about what is said, or how it was said. I think that's how it should be.

Rhino...hey Rhino...do you really care what anybody thinks? I bet the fellow you took fishing Sunday and the guy you will take fishing tomorrow both think you are ok.

Being a Buckeye's fan, I'd think you'd pick up quite a few negatives!

Seriously, it wasn't a week after a certain thread was started on here about having judge-its added that one of the news stations was reporting about "facebookitis" and how many youngsters were being harmed by not getting enough positive feedback! The best advice I ever got concerning feedback came from my first duty station in the air force. The day I reported in my 1st Sgt explained that the commander wouldn't remember my name 10 minutes after I left his office, and that the key to success was making sure he never had a reason to remember it!

Hey guys, don't make this out to be something more than it's meant to be. For quite some time, we recieved feedback to have some sort of way of "voting up" a post, or being able to "rate" a post besides just saying "x2", which some took as a meaningless way to add post counts.

So there you have it. It's now up on the site.

The "reputation" part is meaningless, other than an indicator of how many "x2" responses you get. LOL!

Let's keep it light hearted folks. There's too many negative things in life already.

Thanks!

I got my crappy reputation the old way - I earned it.

As the late, great Groucho Marx said "I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member"
