Fish Chris Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Okay, so I knew I was lagging on getting out for my first bass fishing this year.... I've been playing with the Stripers and for that 1 day, the Sturgeon. And then, it's been so much colder than usual, I was kind hoping that would have held them off on the spawn. Well, on my first trip, yesterday, I saw a thousand empty beds.... and I was thinking, "Oh well. I guess they all came up and popped... going along with the calendar, and / or the moon phase, regardless of the water temps However, today I went to my favorite lake for the last few years > which is probably only 25 miles from the lake above, as the crow flys, and it was cold, still murky from the last run off, and I saw practically zero fanned out beds ! In fact, all I did see, was some really nice fish sitting up shallow, trying to catch some warmth from the sun. Super spooky, and not hungry at all. It seems like every year, I have to hit them just 1 trip early, and it turns out to be a tough trip. Today was that trip. I did scrape out 5 fish from 2 to 5 lbs.... 4 on fly lined crawlers, and 1 on a Huddlebug.... but it was just flat out tough. Not a single tap on my Hud, even though I threw it on all of my best spots ? Okay now granted, these two places are COMPLETELY different. One is a weedy, 140 acre pond. The other is a 1400 acre lake. Deep, and clear. Still, I'll bet the water temps in these two places have not been much different. Does it seem odd to you that one is totally spawned out, and the other has not even started ? Hmmmmm..... Fish Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 13, 2011 Super User Posted April 13, 2011 Do You Find This Strange??? Uh nope I witnessed this on the same body of water, granted the body of water is Toledo Bend Reservoir. At 65+ miles in length the north end can go through pre-spawn/spawn/post-spawn before the south end even hits pre-spawn. Because of its length & width Toledo fishes like 5 separate lakes. Quote
Fish Chris Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 Thanks Catt. I guess I only find it strange for these two places. It just seems to me that in the past, maybe one of these places was was spawning wide open, and the other was just starting, or finishing.... But this year, it seems like the time difference is twice as much, with one completely finished, and the other not even having started ? Hmmm. Peace, Fish Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I fish a lot of different ponds/lakes in my immediate area and there are several that are later than the others... One pond, which is surrounded on three sides by steep mountainsides is in the shade most of the day, and the spawn is sometimes a month or more later than the others. Quote
