Flippin & Pitchin Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I am tossing around the idea of purchasing a new rod for fishing lipless cranks on. Currently I am using a Revo S and an older model 7' M Bass Pro Bionic Blade rod. The setup is ok, but I find myself wanting more out of the rod. I have an Abu Garcia Vendetta paired up with a Revo SX, and really like the feel of it, so I was thinking about maybe upgrading to a Veritas to replace the Bionic Blade. I've never tried throwing a lipless lure on a true crank rod, so I am open to going that route as well. Maybe even moving up to a MH instead of a M??? Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful. My main use for Rat L Traps is burning them over shallow grass beds if that gives you guys a better idea on what I am looking for. Thanks! Quote
BassThumb Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 What kind of cover do you fish? Some of the softer cranking sticks are too soft and whippy to effectively rip crankbaits free of weeds. I prefer a little heavier rod for lipless cranks because I fish them mostly around grass. I use MH/Fast action rods or MH cranking sticks for lipless crankbaits. Using a medium power/moderate action rod for 1/2 oz+ lipless cranks drives me nuts. They relentlessly foul in the weeds. Quote
piscicidal Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I have a M action rod I use for lipless but I don't like it. Can't rip it thru grass well. I will replace it with a MH/MF at the next available opportunity. Quote
Cliff Logue Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I have a M action rod I use for lipless but I don't like it. Can't rip it thru grass well. I will replace it with a MH/MF at the next available opportunity. I use a powell 704cb. It has a fast action tip which helps with ripping the trap out of grass but, has a nice parabolic bend that will help you keep big fish buttoned up. I throw lipless baits a ton on lake guntersville in the spring Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted April 13, 2011 Super User Posted April 13, 2011 Look no further. I've got this rod and it works extremely well. Also works well with spinner baits. G-Loomis Crank Bait rod. CBR906 7'6" 10-20 3/8-1 Mod-Fast Med-Heavy $245.00 This rod was designed specifically for “ripping” lipless crankbaits in grass. It has more length to give you better casting range and lure control, but it’s still very light weight and powerful. It will fish really large deep-diving baits extremely well and has more than enough power to use for stripers or big pike and talk about cover water… this rod will cast a bait a country mile! Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted April 13, 2011 Super User Posted April 13, 2011 Everyone's given you great advice for a rod that you're going to be ripping grass. For situations where you're not dealing with grass or heavy cover I tend to fish them on a Loomis CBR843. I don't know why I like it so much but it just feels right. Quote
bugman Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 A 7' M or MH Mod crank rod is what I use in most situations. I also use a 6'2" MXF for short pin point casts to weed or grass edges or clumps of pads. I like St Croix rods because they tend to have more power for the hook set than other M Xfast tip rods I've used. IMHO Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 13, 2011 Super User Posted April 13, 2011 7' M power, fast action St Croix LTB "Teaser", Citica 201E, spooled with 20lb braid, and a 5' 14lb fluorocarbon leader. The fast action rod and braid are nessacary, IMHO, for ripping the bait free from weeds cleanly, which is how I fish lipless cranks about 90% of the time here. Often I tie direct to the braid, but this time of year pike and bass roam the same areas, so the fluoro helps me get my bait back more times than not. Quote

This is the same one I have. it also works great with DD22's and big cranks. Quote
whoopbazz Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I agree with the stiffer rod/ripping grass statements. But I still like a flimsy fiberglass cranking rod for lipless baits. Here's why: 1) Take a lipped crankbait and pull it through the water along side your boat...feel the resistance; how it drags? Now do it with a lipless bait. It comes zipping through with no resistance whatso ever. Point being on a stiff rod when you set the hook you can actually pull the bait away fromthe fish if he hit it poorly. A spongey rod is slower to react and gives the fish more time to hook themselves. 2) A spongey rod gives more play and shock absorbing. Helps with the hooks pulling out, and if the fish jumps to throw the bait. Lipless baits we tend to fish shallower, which increases the % of jumping bass. A more forgiving rod allows for better playing of a fish. 3) a spongey rod allows for lighter line since it takes the shock out of fighting the fish. Perfect example: by buddy fishes for salmon and steelhead, these fish are 15-30 lbs, in a river current. He uses 4lb line and catches them. Why? Cause he uses a 10' noodles rod with hardley any back bone. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted April 13, 2011 Super User Posted April 13, 2011 A mod action crankbait rod would be preferable fishing in open water situations but I think a MH/F rod is a better choice for ripping out of grass. Quote

I was surprised at how stiff the tip of the 70-5 MMF Veritas rods were. With that being said, I think it will make a good rod for traps. I plan on getting 1 for the same and also using it for some other applications. For $100, I figured it was worth a try. I just wish they made them in a 7'3" or 7'6" length in that particular power/action! Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted April 13, 2011 Super User Posted April 13, 2011 I've been using a Dobyns 733 for lipless cranks. Does a great job of it. Has enough power to rip the lure out of grass, and still has enough flex to not pull the hooks free from the fishes mouth. Quote
A-Rob Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I fish a MH 7'0 David Fritts Glass crankbait rod for my lipless cranks (and actually just about all my cranks as I'm not a pro angler I can't have 3 crankbait rods haha). I find the MH helps to rip the lure from the grass with its back bone, but plenty of give in the tip to soften the force on the trebles when playing a fish. Works pretty good, I need to fish it more this summer....its a goal. Quote
zell_pop1 Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I use the same 7' MH Fritts rod, rips thru grass and pads pretty well. Quote
pat_walker_fishing Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Right now im using a falcon boocu 6'10 med action.....it works great for me Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted April 18, 2011 Super User Posted April 18, 2011 bassin 901 takes about 1500 rods on the boat with him when he goes fishing, so he probably has at least 4 lipless rods Quote

KenG85 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Dude, I'm trying to sell a St. Croix LTB "Big Cranker." This thing is absolutely perfect for ripping traps. And a lot of other things including spinnerbaits and deep cranks. It weighs 3.6oz. and is a MH/MOD, lure weight 3/8-1oz. I even have a Revo Winch I could let go with it. PM me if you're interested. I'm selling it because I bought a dobyns 765cb glass it does everything. Quote
A-Rob Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I use the same 7' MH Fritts rod, rips thru grass and pads pretty well. Nice, good to here it from another person, I have been meaning on really putting some hours in with it this summer. I used it a bunch last summer, the success I had with it dictates more time with it! haha. Quote
