ynnhoj86 Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 oh can someone explain to me how the wind cast magnetic spool thing works. i have baitcaster now, and i still dunno how to dial it in. when its on 10 it doesn't backlash as if it was on 9 or lower numbers. Quote

You can get by with just leaving it on 10, however your cast distance will be decreased. When you get more experienced with using your thumb as a brake, you can start to back off of the magnetic brake in small increments and adjust it according to wind and cast style. Higher brake setting is recommended for flipping or pitching. The higher end Abu's (Orra and Revo's) have a centrifugal brake system that takes care of the backlash issue when the spool is spinning at it's fastest RPM (beginning of a cast). The higher end Revo (the SX, STX and Premiere models)combine both a centrifugal and magent brake system which almost completely eliminates backlashing. I personally have the Orra SX and LOVE it! I have no issues with backlashing, however I do have extensive experience with baitcasters and have my thumb very well trained. Quote

breezy Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 I've had a Black Max (basically the same reel I believe) for 2 seasons now without any issues. It's not the best reel by any means, but I picked up a rod/reel combo for $60 and it was hard to beat at the time. After almost 2 years it doesn't feel quite as 'tight' as it did when new, don't know if there's something wearing out or if this is just an effect of the graphite frame. I think you'll be happy with the reels but in the future you may be better off saving a little more to purchase something like a Revo S or other aluminum framed reel. They should be much tougher and last longer (in theory at least)...I was honestly surprised the Black Max has went this long without any issues. As for the brakes, you probably have the reel adjusted wrong, but IMO the mag braking on most cheaper real just isn't that good to begin with. Adjust the spool tension knob (by handle) until the lure barely drops and you don't get any backlash when it hits the ground. Then put the mag braking on 7-8 or whatever and work your way down. Quote
