Big-B_2579 Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 I am having problems getting casting distance out of my spinning reel. Not sure if it's the reel , the rod , or something I'm doing. I don't use spinning tackle much , so it may be that I need to upgrade my equipment. The reel is a pflueger trion on a berkley 6'6" med action rod. I use it almost exclusively for shakey heads and senkos. Thanks for any advice. Big B. Quote
Wammiee Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Theres a few factors I know of for casting distance 1/ Rod Length (x) 2/ Balance (?) Does your reel size line size matchup to the rod. 3/ MOST LIKELY CAUSE lure weight needs to match your rod standards or add weight to them (?) Your lure sizes are probably somewhere around 1/4-3/4 oz. Quote
philsoreel Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Line size/diameter is another crucial factor. Just the slightest bit too big can cause you all kinds of trouble. Quote
NBR Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 And if the spool is not full enough casts will be short. The spool should be full to 1/8" below the lip.Actually, I fill mine a biy more than this but know in advance I might get some problems with line jumping off the spool. Quote
Super User Marty Posted April 9, 2011 Super User Posted April 9, 2011 Reel size could be a factor. The smaller the diameter of the spool, the shorter the cast assuming an equal number of line revolutions. Quote
intheweeds Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 I had this problem with my set up, which is similar to yours. I started using Yozuri ultra soft 8# with KVD line conditioner and now I can cast a mile. As NBR said, I fill my spool up a bit past the 1/8" mark and that helps a lot. Quote
BassThumb Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Maybe you just need some fresh line. What type and what size line are you using? Are you getting tangles, knots, and birdsnests? This is usually due to spun-up line. Quote
Big-B_2579 Posted April 10, 2011 Author Posted April 10, 2011 I use 10 lb. Trilene flouro . 10 instead of 8 because of the small diameter of flouro . Never had any problems with tangled , knots , or birdnests. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 10, 2011 Super User Posted April 10, 2011 Rod and or line, but as a rod manufacture once told me when I had a similar complaint that my graphite rods had less distance than composite ones, "how far do you really need to throw it anyway"..........he was right. AndyPlaysDrums Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 "how far do you really need to throw it anyway"..........he was right. Well as a (mostly) bank fisherman, I COMPLETELY disagree with this train of thought. I want every bit of distance I can get if I need it. I can always cast shorter. 2 Quote
detroit1 Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 I agree with Andy, and i fish from a boat. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted April 10, 2011 Super User Posted April 10, 2011 I'm guessing the fluro is stiffer and in 10# that may be your culprit. I was throwing a 5" stick with a 1/8 head and 10# mono using a 2500 Stradic on a St. Croix Avid 6'6" M on Friday. I had to back the boat way out because my casts were too long. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 what size trion is the reel? i just paired one with an ugly stik pro lite and i put 8lb trilene xt on it, it casts great. 8lb is about as big as you want to go on the size reel i have. i bet i could cast further with 6lb. either your rod and reel arent paired up well(one is too big/too small for the other) or your line is probably too big. also ive read of people having problems with fluorocarbon on spinning reels, maybe change the type of line would help too and just use a fluoro leader Quote
Big-B_2579 Posted April 26, 2011 Author Posted April 26, 2011 I just wanted to let all who replied to this post know that I have my problem fixed and would like to say thanks for all of your help. Really do appreciate it. I figured you guys probably don't hear that enough. I wound up just changing my line type/size and it was like night/day , the difference . Went from the 10 lb flourocarbon to 8 lb Trilene Sensation (my favorite mono) . Used it today for the first time, and it really worked wonders, I couldn't believe that small of a change made such a big difference . Landed a 3 or so pounder on the setup. Again , I truly appreciate the help from everyone. Keep it up guys , you all make this site what it is ... AWESOME ! Thanks guys. Quote
