Frustating Trip!

Well I just got back from a trip to a little ol' farm pond. This was my second trip to the pond this year. I only caught one little 13 incher, on a t-rigged plastic lizard, but other than that no bites at all! I focused on the two little coves on the pond. One is really shallow with pockets of moss floating around. The other one is deeper with some fallen trees around it. I tried a spinnerbait to to get reaction strikes, and t-rigged plastics (7in. curly tail worm, and a lizard). Just couldn't get any bites! I was thining mebbe it's just "one of those days" where the fish were just weren't biting, but there were tonns of smaller bass jumping up snd eating little bugs of the surface. Should Ihave gone to topwater? Or just maybe switched up my pattern with the soft plastics?

Topwater for sure. But it could have just been one of those days as well. Anytime you see action on the top, ALWAYS try topwater......but this is coming from a topwater addict. Lol

i thought bass were hitting the surface too a couple days ago, but it was happening pretty frequently. then i put down the baitcaster and go my fly rod, matched the hatch and they were all sunfish/bluegill. It may have been bass but for me it wasnt. and believe me i have had a couple of those days on small ponds were you cant catch anything, it sucks.

Try an all white swim jig with a 4 or 5 inch single tail grub. Swim jig in either 1/4 or 5/16oz.

A small minnow bait, preferably in a chrome type of finish. Vary your retrieves until you find something to get that first reaction strike. That should help you pick up a few more fish next time.

Threw wacky rigged worms today and T rigged lizards and did really well fishing in a subdivision pond.

What was the water temperature? Big factor in getting you the right responses. I agree with what was previously said about a white swim jig. Depending on the water temps, you might do even better with a white chatterbait. You can keep this in the strike zone longer than a plain swim jig. It just aggravates the heck out of bass!

I'm guessing your water temps are close to the same as they are here. I've been doing best with a small (1/4 oz) spinnerbait with a single colorado blade fished slowly, and smaller jerkbaits fished with 3-5 second pauses. I'm guessing a wacky rigged senko would also work pretty well if the water is clear enough for a jerkbait to work. The suggestion on the small floating minnow would probably work also, just reel it slow or maybe even twitch it on the surface like a dying minnow.

Hey you did better than i have this year.I have not caught one fish on our boat this year.Weve been skunked everytime except for one time my dad caught a little spot.Other than that ive caught like 2 bluegill and a little 10 inch bass or two from a friends little pond.Gettin aggravated now

It sounds like you had a nice hatch of some type of insect and bait fish were feeding on top. It could have been some smaller bass as well. I tend to fish like Bluebasser86 in this respect because a single colorado spinnerbait on a stop and go retrieve is great during this time of year. There is something about that colorado blade helecoptering down during the pause that drives them crazy (dying fish). Crestliner is right, you didn't mention the water temps, but I'm guessing your in the mid-50's? The surface temp at this time of year would be warmer, especially in the afternoons and I would think that bass would gravitate towards that now. Try and stay up in the water column and whatever you use for a lure, imitate some type of an erratic presention to it. JMHO
