Something Else To Do

Well, by now most of us that aren't able to fish have done about all the cleaning and rearranging we can possibly do. So, here's a new project to waste a little time and to have a little fun with your stuff. Plus, if your are looking for excuses, you'll probably "have to go" to your favorite tackle store!

The Plan: Put together a "small" day box.

This will give you another reason to go through all your gear. Buy yourself a clear pastic Plano box with a handle, no bigger than 18" X 12" X 3". Now that you have restricted your space, you will have to choose wisely. Organize your new box for your next outing, selecting only the lures you think you might actually use that day.

If you want to take this a step further, plan your box and your trip around the idea of using two rigs only:

1 baitcaster, 1 spinning combination.

Packing light, "Have Gun, Will Travel."

BTW,

If you actually give this a try, I mean actually go on a day trip with the little box, I'll bet most of us won't use 25% of what we brought!

I like that idea RW, but I have too many new lures and baits to try out before I can make those decisions. I need to do this anyway to prepare for my wade trips.

I appreciate the tip, Roadwarrior!  I have gotten tired of cleaning out my tackle box continually, and I can't go fishing now, so all I can do is mess around until I can go fishing.  

I'm going to give that a try.

How do you get 35 lbs of baits in that little box and how do you fish all day with only two rods?? ;D

Sorry for joking, this really is a challenge for me as I usually fish in a 16' boat all by myself and can carry nearly anything I want. I am going to give your challenge a try as I have been thinking about doing just that a lot lately. Though it's a little like trying to decide which one of your kids to take on vacation. LOL

I hardly ever use more than one rod because most of my fishing is wading or I'm fishing with friends without rods so I lend them my extras. If I do fish with multiple rods, it's only two because I only have two rods good enough to fish with.

It's funny you mentioned that RW, because I have thought of that same thing a while ago when I wanted to keep a travel fishing set in my car. I have a travel tackle belt along with three 3-piece rods (two 6'6" MH power baitcasters - 1 with flouro & 1 with mono along with one 6'6" M Power spinning rod with Hybrid line). Here are the lures I carry:

-White Spinnerbait

-Chartreuse & White Buzzbait

-Black & Blue Jig

-Several Different Colored Senkos

-Berkley Ribbontail Worms (Black & Red)

-LC Pointer 100 Jerkbait (Ghost Minnow)

-LC CB250 (Brown Trout)

-Rapala Weedless Spoon (Gold)

-Yo-Zuri Rattlin' Vibe (Ghost)

There are several fishing ponds I like to hit on the way home from work and these lures seem to cover all the situations I will see from shore.

2: Oldham's Lures Trailer Hitch Jig, 3/8 oz Black/Blue, Gene Larew Salty Hawg Craws in 6 with 1 ½ cut off the tail on the deck

3: Texas Rigged Craw Worm or Baby Brush Hog on the deck

4: Carolina Rig in the rod box

5: Spinner Bait/Rat-L-Trap/Buzz Bait in the rod box

When I first launch the boat I'll toss a 50 pack of Gene Larew 7 ½ Salty Ring Worms in Cinnamon Pepper Neon/June Bug Laminated (Camouflage) on the console.

I honestly don't think this would be too hard.  First of all, you have to consider the time of year.  If its spawning, obviously a finess rod and a baitcaster for jigs.  As far as tackle goes, take lizards in several colors, and jigs in a variety of colors.  

If its pre-spawn, obviously bigger senkos and soft plastics are key.  Crankbaits of a few colors and sizes are good any time of year.  Spinnerbaits go the same way.  A few top-water baits and you're set.  This is just what I think I would do... and I think I'll try it.   I've never thought of this.  I have thought of taking just one bait for a day, but not just a few select baits.  Thanks for the idea RW.

I have to walk into a couple of the lakes that I fish.  It's about a mile to one of them.  The lake are no deeper than 12 feet and perfect for wading.  I have a small tackle back with two small Plano boxes in it.  I carry:

One baitcaster reel & 6'6" MH rod

3-4 black & white H&H spinnerbaits

3-4 chartruese H&H spinnerbaits

2 Pop-R's

2 small white buzzbaits

2 Rapala firetiger DT4 crankbaits

2 Mann's Baby 1 minus crankbaits

Mann's Hardnose watermelon lizards

2 Rapala jerkbaits

A few bullet weights and hooks

4" Finesse worms

2 3/8 oz jigs

When the ice eventually thaws out and there is water agin.  I plan on atleast for two or three trips to take nothing but a C rig outfit and some extra terminal tackle and one or two bags of plastic's   For some reason I have been hooked pretty bad on the C rig.
