Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Hey guys i need help deciding where to mount a transducer for my new Sonar unit. The boat is a 2000 nitro 750nxdc.The old transducer cannot be removed i've tried everything. First pic..Old transducer location (blue rectangle) and what i think is the best new location( red rectangle). I would prefer i REALLY don't want to drill holes in the transom. Second pic is transom mount location i think is best (black rectangle) Take a look a let me know what you think is the best location to mount the new transducer. Also last pic is of the dual console that broke (and can't be replaced at the moment) any ideas on what i can do with this hole. Quote
Todd Driscoll Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 No doubt, the best place is where your old ducer is. You should be able to remove it, preferably by hitting it with a rubber mallet. If it's hard to hit directly, get a pry bar and a hammer. I've removed a good many old ducers and never had one I couldn't get out. I will say the more stubborn ones did come out in pieces. Once removed, make sure you sand away all the old epoxy and clean/dry area thoroughly. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 6, 2011 Super User Posted April 6, 2011 You didn't mention what unit's transducer you want to mount. That can make a BIG difference. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 You didn't mention what unit's transducer you want to mount. That can make a BIG difference. Its a humminbird 560 (el-cheapo i know). It stated that it could be installed either thru-hull or transom mount. Todd: I'm very nervous about damaging the fiberglass have you ever encounterd a problem when removing an old transducer? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 6, 2011 Super User Posted April 6, 2011 I've removed several also. I've had the easiest removal by chipping away the excess epoxy around the transducer before whacking it on the side with a hammer. It pops off easily. The large face transducers are more difficult to remove such as the Humminbird transom types. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 11, 2011 Author Posted April 11, 2011 Ok so i took the old Transducer out (it was easier than expected) but can't mount the new in the hull.. Its got a temp sensor (piece of metal sticking out the bottom and the instructions say the temp will not work with a in hull installation) so instead of drilling in the transom i thought about mounting a piece of alum. to the anode(?) kit....Tell me if ya think it will work or not and why...Thanks!! Super User Fishing Rhino Posted April 11, 2011 Super User Posted April 11, 2011 I wouldn't attach anything to the anode. First, the anode is a sacrificial piece which disintegrates in the presence of electrolysis, or is it galvanic action? I get the two confused. Electrolysis, I believe is caused by a current leaking into the water, much like they use in electroplating metals. Galvanic action is two dissimilar metals forming a battery, of sorts, and generating a current which will erode the less noble metal. Either way, the anode is not intended to be, nor should it be used as a structural member of your boat for mounting anything. If I wanted to mount the transducer at or on the transom, I'd determine where it should go, drill the appropriate size holes in the transom, fill them with a marine grade silicone sealant with a small donut of sealant around the holes, and mount the bracket. One and done. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 11, 2011 Author Posted April 11, 2011 Good point Rhino, I thought the same thing with the structural part of your post but actually the anode has holes through it so its actually mounted into the motor bracket(?) With 1 stainless bolt...the reason I do not want to drill into the transom is that this is a cheap fish finder that I hope to upgrade later and really don't want to have to fill in holes...plus I would think that holes filled with epoxy or something would take away from the resale value should I ever decide to sale it.....can you think of any other way I might could mount it without drilling holes??...Thanks! Super User Wayne P. Posted April 12, 2011 Super User Posted April 12, 2011 Get a XP 9 20 T transducer for shoot-thru. It has a remote temp sensor. It is listed as compatable with your 560. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted April 12, 2011 Super User Posted April 12, 2011 One of the xducers that I have in my boat has a temp sensor on it. It measures the temp of the hull instead of the water. It is a few degrees off the one on the tmotor but that is inconsequential. You can also get something like they send with Lund boats for an outside mount. It is a mounting board that fits against your transom and is screwed in to the boat above the waterline. I used a piece of a cutting board to mount an xducer on the outside of my friend's Champion. Super User Fishing Rhino Posted April 12, 2011 Super User Posted April 12, 2011 I understand your reluctance to drill into the transom. You wouldn't fill the holes with epoxy. You'd fill them with gel coat. Get the proper color and they would not be noticable. A bit of wet sanding followed by buffing and you'd never know they were there. If you aren't comfortable, it would cost you a few bucks. I think Wayne has your best option. The kicker is the remote sensor will need to be attached to the hull, most likely with a screw. But, that's only one hole. I offer this suggestion. When you upgrade, leave the unit you want to use now on your boat, and when you trade or sell, let it go with the boat. My boat came with a dash mounted Lowrance. I added a Humminbird 898. I run both of them. There are times when a plain old sounder tells you all you need to know about the bottom beneath the boat. I refer to that simple unit frequently. The Lowrance does shoot through the hull and has the temp sensor screwed to the stern. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted April 13, 2011 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted April 13, 2011 get a piece of "star board" and cut it to fill the hole on the passenger console. Is the wind shield broken also? Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 get a piece of "star board" and cut it to fill the hole on the passenger console. Is the wind shield broken also? Thanks for the suggestion FD i never thought of that, i will definitely have to look into that as an option. The windsheild is fine it did not break and probably the only reason the dash did is because it was cracked beforehand. But i will say that those waves hot hard and certainly left a mark. Quote
