Years ago my first 5 lb bass was caught when I overthrew a ballhead jig and plastic onto the bank from my jon boat. As I was trying to get it free from the grass, it popped out and into the water where it got freight trained by the fish. A few times over the years I have caught fish after picking out a backlash after throwing a worm. It sucks when that happens because they're usually gut hooked by then.

Have you ever caught any under unusual circumstances ?

When I was a newbie to baitcasting, my thumb bar got stuck on my cheap reel, right after a long cast. As I am trying to fix it, my buddy tells me there is a fish jumping like crazy in the area where I casted it. Now I'm frantic trying to get this thing to be able to engage and reel in, and when I finally do, I realize the fish is attached to my line, I reel it in and it's a nice 3 pound smallie. Still have the reel, a pflueger criterion, but don't use it anymore, maybe I should.

this year on my baitcaster i was throwing a senko, a 4 inch one so it was barely under the weight limit, i ended up backlashing. After i picked it up i felt dead weight on it, set the hook and caught a nice slab crappie about 12-13 inches. Surprised i hooked him right through the lip

Pretty much the same, I was throwing a popper with a BC and the wind kicked up causing a nasty backlash. We were hearing a fish keep jumping and my buddy asks if I have a fish on my line. I looked down at my slack line and replied "no". I finally get the backlash picked thru and the fish jumps again. I reel up the slack only to figure out that the jumping fish has my popper in it's mouth. Turned out to be a 3lbs smallie.

bilgerat, that 5 lber you got is actually a great early season technique. I was using that last spring with excellant results. It's best when you have a steep bank. A lot of times they hit just as the lure enters the water and other times maybe 1 hop down the bank.

I once caught a fish when my line was over a small tree branch. The senko was dangling in the water and at some point a fish grabbed it. Was kind of a pain to reel him in though!

Me and my fishing partner were fishing a tourney last year @ Lake Jordan here in bama. It was a great tourney. Pouring down rain i tried to keep one eye peeled for his hooksets because I would have never heard him call for net. Well it happened. He sets the hook I immediately drop my rod to get the net (coosa river spots DONT PLAY) net his fish a good 3.5lb spot. Walk back to livewell to cull look at my rod everything is good. Cull a fish pick up my rod and see my line is swimming off. BAM set the hook and catch a 3.5lb spot. Ended up with 16.5lb on the day.

I cast over a tree branch that was about three feet above the water and got tied up. My senko was hanging 6-8" above the water and as the wind moved the branch it would dip the tail in the water. While I waited on my buddy to troll us over to it I got to watch a bass jump straight up, bite the senko and hook itself. It was waiting there for me when we pulled up.

If I accidentally cast over a branch, I'll jerk the bait up and down in the water with the hopes of getting bit.

Once I cast deep into a tree and thought I was hung up bad. I gave a desperation jerk and the bait came flying back at me. I ducked out the way and it flew past me into the lake behind me and was promptly inhaled.

A couple years ago a willow tree at my friends cottage fell down into the water next to his dock, and he just left it there in the water figuring it would be good cover for bass, and was still far enough from the dock to get the boat in there. One time I was standing on the dock pitching a texas rigged brush hog at the tree. On my third or fourth cast, my line went over a branch I was trying to get it under about 2 feet above the water. Of course I get a hit as soon as my bait hits the water. I set the hook on a dink so hard that it lifted him right out of the water, and embedded the hook point into the tree branch, so I'm standing there on the dock with a fish nailed to a tree at the end of my line! I ended up having my buddy hold my rod while I went over and climbed out on the tree from the bank to unhook the fish.

Nightfishing when i got a backlash and picked it out. My buzzbait was just chilling on the bottom the whole time. I clear my reel and start reeling. I feel the buzzbait vibrate momentarily, then get a freight train of a hit. Decent 3-4lb bass. Dunno if it was just watching the buzzbait or just reacted on it. One heck of a hit though.

Caught one today on a bad cast. I was throwing a shallow crank into a strong wind and the hooks fowled on the cast. I was jerking it back in trying to untangle the hooks with the bait just twirling across the surface. As soon as it righted itself and dove a few inches it got nailed. Ended up being the best fish of the day. It's funny how those things happen.

The biggest fish caught between me and my buddies at a pond we fish came at an unexpected time.

I was throwing a worm out (I think it was a 4" Power Worm) and was bouncing it off the bottom.

Probably 10' from the bank I started to reel it in pretty fast to throw it out again and BAM!

I knew the fish was pretty big for my standards and when I finally got it in, it was about 4lbs.

What made it better was an older couple sitting on the bench behind me. They seemed more excited than I was.

Yep, one time I was fishing with my friend at his neighborhood lake and I got a backlash fishing a buzzfrog and caught a solid 3 pounder. Never would I have done that out of my own free will, especially with a buzzfrog!

I have another one, but this was a friend. This kid isn't big into fishing, but he enjoys it.

He has a cheap combo from Wal-Mart that he uses, so I decided to teach him how to cast a baitcaster.

I put the brakes on so he wouldn't backlash and after a few tries he was able to get it about 15' out.

He had a slight backlash, but nothing too major. The buzzbait I had tied on sank as he was picking the backlash out.

It only took him a couple seconds to get it out and as soon has he started reeling, a fish was on.

I have never seen a fish eat a buzzbait of the bottom, but that's probably because you don't fish them on the bottom.

So it was his first buzzbait and baitcaster fish which was kind of cool.

Two years ago in a tourneament in Tuscaloosa, Al....I was throwing a spinnerbait when the reel backlashed. The boater (my uncle) kept trolling. when I cleared the backlass, there was a fish on. It turned out to be the kicker fish we needed to make our sack and we won the tournament.

Sometimes when I fish on a friend's boat we cast on to rocky shores on purpose and plop the lure in the water. Also, I can't count the number of times I have finished picking out a backlash to find a fish on the end of my line. I guess I need to slow down my presentation. :)

not exactly on the bottom, but i catch fish on buzzbaits fishing them underwater, oddly enough, never had a top water strike on a buzzbait though.

I fish from a kayak... one day we were out and it was slightly windy so we were being blown around a fair amount. Mid way through reeling in a cast I was drifting bad towards the shore, so I stopped reeling, laid my pole down and began to paddle a bit. As soon as I picked up my paddle my pole starts diving into the water, a bass had taken the buzzbait when it began sinking. Dropped my paddle, saved the pole... fish on

I caught a nice 20 inch fish one time on a jerkbait that was spiraling on the surface with a leaf stuck to it larger than the bait. Probably the worst presentation ever.

Threw an unweighted fluke for the first time and birds nested. Spent a minute getting it out, reeled in the excess line, then realized there was a fish on the other end.

Caught a nice 8lbs fish last year, while trying to get my sons lure out of some brush he was holding my rod and he pushed the thumb bar and my jig fell straight down from the boat and he was just standing there when the big girl darn near pulled him in the lake. It scared the crap out of him and he threw the rod at me and I had to reel her in. Funniest thing I ever saw other then the time he caught a 4 foot copper head while being stupid!!lol That was funny!!

One time I was out fishing with my fiance when she hooked a pickerel. I rushed to get the net and left my rod hanging over the side with my grub no more than 6 inches underwater and practically touching the boat. After Im done unhooking her pickerel cause she hates them, I turn around to picl up my rod just as it was sliding over the side of the boat. 4lb Smallie. My guess is it was following the pickerel to the boat and then saw the lure
