Mono Of Braid

I've been fishing with mono, and I'm thinking of going to braid. Not sure what to use, what color, etc.... Also do you need stiffer rods and so on... does anybody have a good suggestions?

Power Pro in Moss Green. You will notice way more sensitivity and will get a much tighter hook set. I was adviced to go braid on this forum for my Brush Hog rod and man what a difference from mono. If the hook is in there mouth its game over now. I hardly ever miss a hook set now.

now do you only use it in your baitcaster, or also in your spinning reel? Do you use a mono, or flo leader at all? What lb is most versatile?

I dont want to get to heavy because some lures call for lighter tackle ya know!

Here is a general Power Pro to Mono size chart. Some mono lines sizes do vary though, just match them up by diameter size.

Spend the extra dollar to get Power Pro 50# in green color.

I had a real stiff rod with no tip once and with braid it was too stiff and I felt the fish couldn't inhale the lure. I would get a rod with a bit of tip so the fish can actually inhale the jig and load the rod a bit as the braid won't stretch.

So I pitch a medium heavy a lot with the braid no problem at all. Some people go Heavy with a nice tip. I won't throw my MH in heavy heavy stuff....but our cover up north isn't as heavy.

You will love the braid, your confidence will go up as your hooksets will be destructive (in a good way) and you know your knots won't break.

I do find that on cheaper baitcasting reels braid is sometimes tough to pitch as the spool is not as smooth as a higher quality reels. I have a couple citicas and curado and they work great with braid.

I assumed you were fishing baitcasting gear. I actually fish 15-20 braid on my spinning reel to M and MH. For these I may tie a flouro leader. But the braid works great on spinning gear to.

Sounds like a plan! Yea im fishing a Quantum kvd series. I like it so far, and it would beable to handle the braid! Thanks for the help!

i would be careful on what you fish braid with because it will lose fish for you in the cents that in clear water they can see it. i know guys that throw braid on their crankbaits. but i do love braid myself I use it when fishing in weeds ect. and i do use it for jigs occasionally with a 15lb or 20lb leader. im a big fan of pline its the strongest i found but it is more expensive for mono but braid idk i have fished spider wire for years and i havent had problems with it and i only fish 35 braid. i hope you catch tons on what ever you decied hope the info helps.

The most common mistake that people make when using braid is using too heavy of a rod. Flipping a Dobyns 735 with 20 floro is great, but with braid, you feel the fish sooner and the fish feels you sooner. You need a rod that will give you that extra second to set the hook before the fish drops the bait. I always go down a power when using braid. A Dobyn 734 is much better. In other words, use a MH instead of a Heavy rod. Also, you may find that you like more of a moderate action or mod. fast instead of fast or ex. fast. Once again, that will help to cushion against the no stretch of braid.

As far as brand, IMO Suffix is far superior to Power Pro and Spider Wire. The Suffix Performance Braid is great and the new Suffix 832 is holding up well so far too. Green is the way to go as far as color.

It aslo depends on what you are going to be doing with this rod. If it is for T-Rigs and Jigs, then refer to my earlier statements, but for a frog, I do like a Heavy rod.

I would try one or two rigs with braid first and see how you like it. I have tried it over the past two years on a couple of my spinning and baitcasters and didn't care for it.

If you are going to catch big fish in Fl then you will be fishing in the thick stuff so you are going to need braid.

I prefer MH rods 7 ft and longer, power pro in assorted weights, and high speed revo reels.

I pulled the following from a post earlier this year. This is what I use, specifically. Everyone I know in Florida that catch a lot of fish have very similar setups and baits. You will develop your own favorites, but this will get you started in the right direction.

The only other rod you might need is a medium spooled with 12 lb big game and a 30lb snap. I use this to throw a zara spook, devils horse, rattle trap, and small square billed cranks.

The only rod I have with mono is my crankbait set-up, everything else is braid. PowerPro and Suffix (in my opinion) are the best out there at the moment. As far as fishing with a leader, if I am not fishing near rocks, I dont care for leaders. As already stated, go down in rod action, when I made the transition years ago, I learned the hard way. I broke two flipping rods before I realized what I was doing wrong.

You should have at least a few rods rigged with braid. I wouldn't use anything but braid for flipping heavy weeds, frogs, and C-rigging.
