zenyoungkoh Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Hi! im fishing this pond with pretty small bass, mostly 1-3 pounders. Do you guys think a 5" plastic worm rigged Texas (weightless) on a 4/0 worm hook is small enough to catch 1 pounders? Quote
ofl0926 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 i think you should be good. i use flukes on 3/0 and they eat them up Quote
Super User Marty Posted April 4, 2011 Super User Posted April 4, 2011 A 5" worm should serve you very well. Quote
Blues19 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I would be throwing a 3/16 oz chartreuse white spinnerbait, but im on a spinnerbait kick. What your using sounds good, but the hook sounds kinda big Quote
ProCraft Joe Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Hook sounds a little big to me too. I think 2/0 or 3/0 is plenty 1 Quote
fishingkidPA Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 try using some inline spinners like roostertails or Mepps Quote
hookingem Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Rooster tail, 3in senko wacky rigged (catches big fish too) Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 5, 2011 Super User Posted April 5, 2011 If I were actually trying to catch small bass, I'd probably throw a T-rigged 4" finesse worm or a Wordens Rooster Tail. (Back in the day, we've caught our share of Jersey runts on CP Swings and ABU reflexes). Roger Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted April 5, 2011 Super User Posted April 5, 2011 5" finesse worm on a shakey head or t-rigged on a 2/0 hook will destroy dinks Quote
backwater4 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 The worm will definitely work. Some other good pond baits are: 1/8 black finesse jig inline spinner (blue fox gold) 3" wacky senko 4" tiny brush hog / shakey head Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted April 5, 2011 Author Posted April 5, 2011 thanks guys. I'll use a 3/0 hook instead. Does jigs get hung up alot? The pond i fish in have some heavy cover during summer. Quote
Blue Streak Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Might try a 4 inch Powewr Bait worm with a 1/0 hook or a small square bill crank bait. Quote
The Bassinator Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Baby brush hog weightless or t-rigged, finesse worm weightless twitch it back or t-rigged, small crank baits, small jigs, small poppers, small jerkbaits small everthing!!! Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted April 5, 2011 Author Posted April 5, 2011 Im using a 5" berkley powerbait shaky worm. The bass dont hit top water now, they are either looking for mate or bedding. The pond im fishing is only 2-4' deep Quote
1nstinct Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 try the booyah pond magic spinner bait(about $3 at walmart) i love they there small enough to get some 1 pounders bass to have some fun and also small enough that the big guys cant resist a nice easy meal caught plenty of 1-3 pounders and also my record 5.2 pounder on them. try the white one first Quote
detroit1 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Everything in my tacklebox will slay the dinks, but may i suggest a s/k bitsy tube or a 4" worm on a slider head... Quote
guitarkid Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 the same lures you would use on "regular" bass. Most people think that you have to down size in ponds, but I find the opposite true. I would recomend a 3/8 ounce booyah spinnerbait in what ever color you like, a trick worm rigged any way you like. shoot even try something like a magic swimmer or a TT or BBZ shad. The biggest thing is to try and match the forage. -gk Quote
A-Rob Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 A wacky rigged 4" senko will catch small bass nicely. That would be my go to for your situation. Your finesse worm should work to...1lb bass are greedy. If the wind picks up I've had a ton of luck in ponds with a small spinnerbait like the booyah pond version. I swapped the blade for something slightly bigger..... it fires them up! Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 I went fishing today... Bass are just entering post spawn period now around the pond. I saw 3 beds the other day, and all of them are now empty. Tried 5" berkley watermelon shaky worm with no hits. Switched to Yum's 3" green pumpkin grub, got 1 hit no hook ups I used a 3/0 hook. What should i try next time? I'll try to get some spinners next time i visit the tackle shop. But as of now, i have 5" watermelon shaky worms, 3" greenpumpkin grub, 3" berkley tiger power grubs, crankbaits from 2"-4", 2" swimbaits, 2" grubs, 3" berkley trout worms. 1.5" white tubes. Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 btw the pond range from 2 to 4 feet deep Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted April 6, 2011 Super User Posted April 6, 2011 1/8 OZ. SPINNER-BAIT. Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 Smaller bass are usually more aggressive in my experience. If the worm is all you're using, depending on worm design and thickness, the rig should work. Sinker size is as important but I guess you would have asked if you weren't sure. Its a finesse worm i believe. Its a berkley 5" shaky worm. Quote
