basslover12345 Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Ok, This week the high for each day reads as following for the next 10 days 58, 76, 52, 62,66, 63, 62, 65, 65, 60 degrees. Would this trigger the bass to move up and Spawn? Last year, here in MD I caught a bass full of eggs out of the shallows on April 7th, but we had an 88 degree Air temperature, an Caught a bloody male bass off a bed April 23 last year in shallow water. Its a high of 60 today here with a 30.09 Barometric pressure. Right now we are supposed to have a full moon April 18 and it has been getting dark at like 7:30 here. The monthly forecast for April looks like it will consistently 68 and 69 degrees. I have started to go through the ponds by my house and make mental notes on where I find stickups and submerged logs along the shoreline. The last I checked on March 29 the water temp was in the Low 50s Quote
boneil Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 water temperature will dictate spawn. with this recent cold weather water temps might have dropped a little in the ponds. I could be wrong but I think it will take more than a week or two of 60 degree weather to bring water temps up and stay up for a consistant amount of time before the bass spawn. Quote
Oscar O. Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Water temperature will definitely have an impact on the spawn, however, knowing how much the air temperature affects water temperature can be a bit trickier. With the way water holds and gives off heat, it takes a while for it to warm up and cool down. Although it is important to look at the highs from a weather forecast, I also believe it is a good idea to take a quick look at the lows as well. The days might be moderately warm but if nights are really cold, then I don't think that will help the water temperature to increase much. Regarding moon phase, I believe the first full moon after consistently warm weather triggers bass to move up, or at least that's what I've heard, not sure if new moon applies. That being said, I've read that the biggest females often move in before the masses do, so even if you're not sure whether or not the water is warm enough, if you have time it might be worthwhile to put on the polarized glasses and get on the water. So if the weather holds like the forecast, I'd say the spawn is right around the corner. If you can, check the temperatures in the shallow protected areas and find the warmest ones and try it out to see if you can bring in a big one! Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 4, 2011 Super User Posted April 4, 2011 It will probably trigger pre-spawn Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 4, 2011 Super User Posted April 4, 2011 Where are you? Knowing your geographical location would be helpful. Just watch the Dogwoods in your area. When they bloom the bass will go to their beds. And yes, water temperature is #1 consideration when the bass go to bedding. Moon phases are #2. Quote

basslover12345 Posted April 4, 2011 Author Posted April 4, 2011 I live in Olney, MD, about 45 minutes outside D.C. My mom says the Dogwoods in her gardens should be opening up any day now. The ponds I fish are like a ghost town, I haven't see a fish or caught a fish in months Quote
