airborne_angler Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Can both a trailer hook and trailer be used on a spinnerbait? Ive been throwing spinnerbaits and the trailer hook has helped me out on more than 1 occasion. How would you incorporate a trailer onto a spinnerbait when you are using a trailer hook? Can both be used on one bait without having problems with the bait getting fouled up? Please share your experiences. Is it a matter of being able to incoroporate either one or the other and not both? Super User Wayne P. Posted May 7, 2009 Super User Posted May 7, 2009 I frequently put a curlytail grub on a trailer hook and add it to a spinnerbait. Quote
basser89 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I rarely use a trailer on a spinnerbait (all but always use a trailer hook). About the only time I do is in muddy water when I want to add a little more bulk to the bait, it's usually a big grub when I do. I'll put the grub on first (tail pointed down) and then the trailer hook, followed by the keeper. The trailer will hang up on the trailer hook on occassion for me but the majority of the time, everything works fine. Hope this helps! Quote
LAO162 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I'd been wondering the same thing. Thanks for the tips Quote
airborne_angler Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 I tried to picture putting a trailer on the trailer hook and then attaching it to the main spinnerbait hook with a keeper, wouldnt that make the bait VERY long in profile? Would this work with any success? Im not exactly saying im doubtful,as I am new to Spinnerbait fishing and im sure anything is possible, but please enlighten me to any success stories with this method. Quote

Yes, that would lengthen the profile of the bait. I have tried it before but with very limited success, but that's just me. I can see that it could be beneficial if the bass are keying in on larger/longer baitfish. Hopefully Wayne can add his insight! Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted May 8, 2009 Super User Posted May 8, 2009 A trailer hook is to catch bass that won't commit to taking the spinnerbait near the blade. Putting the grub on the trailer hook is just an addtional attractor to try to make them commit to eating it. It also gives it more bulk so it can be worked slower. Quote
Super User Marty Posted May 8, 2009 Super User Posted May 8, 2009 I'd put the trailer on, then the trailer hook on top. But personally I've had problems with grubs tangling with the hook, although straight-tailed trailers haven't caused any problems. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 8, 2009 Super User Posted May 8, 2009 Of course you can. In fact, you can do anything you want to a spinnerbait. I usually use a trailer hook in tournaments, with or without a plastic trailer. Most of the time I just use the trailer hook unless I want to "bulk up" the spinnerbait. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 8, 2009 Super User Posted May 8, 2009 I'll not only add plastic trailers but pork as well Trailers add bulk which slows the rate of fall when yo-yoing or fluttering spinner baits; killer techniques seldom used by weekend anglers. Quote
