Sammy's are a good choice. I've caught some of my biggest smallies on spooks.

All I use for top waters are Heddon Super Spook Jr in bone. I will only throw white top water baits. I have used lucky craft sammys in the past. I don't like them as munch. There are a few reasons. You need dead flat waters it seems like to make them walk. They don't make the knocking noise like spooks and other top water baits. hope this helps.

Ditto on the spooks! I have success on the Pop-R, Sammies, etc., but the spooks just work great. If I had to chose a better bait (but not by much) for the sake of recommending something different it would be the Rapala Skitterwalk or Skitterpop. They are by far my favorite topwater stick baits.

:) Yeah, I love topwater...

I can't wait to use the buzzjet (thanks J Franco). Also picked up a Kelly J that I'm excited about.

The spook and spook jr. are hard to beat, I like the sammy too but like someone else mentioned calmer water helps with them. Someone mentioned the Kelly-J, I like this bait but added a barrel swivel due to some line twisting. I also like the pop-r, G-splash, yellow magic and rico for poppers.

Thanks for the tip on the Kelly J. I'm new to this one so I'll keep that in mind!

Maybe I should add the pop-max to my collection as well.  :o

Darn bait monkey!

caught some of my biggest smallies on a skitterwalk in bluegill in the shadows in shallow water. Usually they strike and miss the first two times, but the third time they nail it.

Though not always on the surface, I always did well on smallies with rebel crawfish, especially in rivers, reeling in the direction the current is moving.

I have had great success with the Skitter PROP......I usually rip it pretty hard with a changing cadence....Vicious strikes!

The Sammy has been really good to me for smallmouth. I've also done pretty well with an Excaliber Zell pop.
