Ned rig

Tubes, flukes, grubs and stick baits all have a place and time.  I always have a tube tied on because it's a 12 month bait. Flukes can be deadly in spring around emerging grass and fallen trees.  Grubs can be fan cast and covers a lot of water to find feeding fish.  Sticks are good around all kinds of cover, but skipping them under docks can be fire.

Never forget the Ned rig either

I don't know if I could pick a "best". Most of my smallmouth fishing is in a river. I use tubes, flukes, yum dingers, rage structure bugs, sweet beavers, grubs, hula grubs and zman/ned rig.

Most of them I use in more than one application and I've had good results with all.

My PB Smallie was on a TRD Craw from Zman, but I usually get the most numbers from Berkley Chigger Craws either on a football head or on a Split Shot rig.

Best color tube?  If you had to pick one.

That color works very well on Sag Bay and St Clair.  But there is one in the coffee tube line that's even better.  From my experience.

3.8" Keitech on a flashy swimmer or a 3.5" SK Coffee Tube

Posted

I've got more 2.75" tubes than 3.5" lately. I also use Keitech easy shiner swimbaits. They have a more minnow like shape than the swing impacts and I like the colors that can be a little more translucent without the ribs of the swing impacts. The easy shiner perch color is as close to a real perch as I think I can get.

In the two lakes I get to fish with a population of smallmouth, the best producers have been the 3" Gitzit Chub Tube in brown craw S&P and the 2.75" Dry Creek Drop Shot tube in baby bass. However, my biggest smallmouth have pretty much all been on a deep driving crankbait when I wasn't targeting them.
