boogie Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Anyone use braid line on their spinning reel ? Used straight up or as a backer for fluorocarbon ? What lb test ? Thx Quote
TimJ Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I use it often on StClair. If they are all over it, braid direct to bait works well with little to no difference with a leader. If they are not biting aggressively, I use a flouro leader. I use 20lb braid which has diam of 8lb mono. TJ Quote
WanderLust Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 My two boys (7 & 8) use Power Pro 20# on their spinning setups with no leader. Results were excellent. Quote
fishizzle Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 15lb power pro no leader on my 2 smallmouth spinning rods. bites all day. senkos and small jigs. water is pretty clear--like 4 or 5 ft. sometimes I use a black permanant marker to darken the line near the tip but not always. Quote
Md Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I like 10 lb. Fireline Crystal with a 7 lb Sunline flouro leader. Quote
Dave T. Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 All I use on my spinning reels anymore is braid... sometimes with a floro/mono leader. I use both the 10lb and 20lb Sufix Performance braid, or the 15lb Sufix Stretch braid. Going to try some of the Sufix 832 braid this year. Also have some 15lb Samurai braid that I'm dying to try. MNGeorge Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 20# braid, usually with a fluoro leader, more for abrasion resistance than visibility...lots of sharp rocks in the river. Quote
pantherdev Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Remember to use some mono backer on the spool before you wind on the braid or you will swear that your drag is not working when the braid starts spinning on the spool when trying to set the hook. I do use flouro as a leader because I am fishing for walleye and still end up catching smallies too. I use PPro #20 and love it. Quote
NewKidInTown Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Anyone use braid line on their spinning reel ? Used straight up or as a backer for fluorocarbon ? What lb test ? Thx 15lb Spiderwire Invisbraid on the spinners,,.30lb on the baitcasters. If I am near rocks,I tie a co poly leader via and Albright knot. Other than that, straight braid is the deal..Sharpie marker is something you can use to color it black if it makes you feel more comfortable. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 11, 2011 Super User Posted March 11, 2011 I like 10 lb. Fireline Crystal with a 7 lb Sunline flouro leader. I agree. However, I use 6# test fluoro leader to the Fireline. Works for me. Quote
APK62 Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Using 10 lb Power Pro with 6 lb or 8 lb FC leader. Quote
bucky Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 I use 20lb PRRO, also use fluro tail. No problems with this setup. Quote
bassnleo Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I used to use straight GAMMA flouro, 6 lb test, on my drop shot set-up. 2 years ago I switched to 8 lb braid and a leader of the same GAMMA line. I'll never go back to straight flouro. The braid eliminates line twist issues common with both mono and flouro, gives you great bite detection even in deeper depths, and lasts a long time. I've also switched a few other spinning set-ups to braid w/ leader and experiencing great results. The only downside I've noticed with braid is that it is not abraision resistant around rocks. That's where the flouro leader really shines. Quote
Fish Chris Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 I've used nothing but braided line, mostly on spinning reels, for going on 15 years. 10 lb on my micro-lights, 30 lb on my medium-lights, 50 lb on my heavy rods for swimbaits, or Striper fishing. I always use a mono, or fluoro leader. Not so much for the visibility factor, but for the greatly increased abrasion Resistance around rocks, or the teeth of a big bass + also, for the little bit of a shock absorber the mono leader adds to my basically zero-stretch braided main line. If you think about it, a 3ft mono leader, might give you 6" to 8" of stretch, before it parts. That might be enough to keep from ripping a hook out, or straightening it, breaking a rod, or simply snapping off your braided line ! Granted, braid is super strong, but with almost zero stretch, it is subject to failure from sudden shock loads. Braided line with a mono leader is as good as it gets Fish Quote
