Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 19, 2011 Global Moderator Posted January 19, 2011 Anyone do much night fishing for smallies? I night fish for largemouth and have lots of success but I tried for smallmouth last year and couldn't buy a strike from a smallie. The lake I was fishing for them isn't heavily pressured so maybe they don't feel the need to avoid the heavy pressure during the day to feed at night. I've heard you can catch some monster smallies at night and there's supposed to be some in the lake I was fishing. I catch lots of smallmouth out of this lake so I know they're in there and in the spots I was fishing. I mainly fishing a black and blue jig, a black single colorado bladed spinnerbait, a black sapphire trick worm on a shakey head, a black buzzbait, and an aurora black sammy. Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on what I might do differently? The water has about 3 foot of visibility and is mainly rock structure with very little brushpiles or any cover. I was fishing in the middle of summer with night time temps in the 70's and daytime temps in the 90's to 100's. Quote
SMfisher Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 we have success using jitterbugs but we are fishing in a river. black is the best all around color in the 5/8 size. we also use yellow, chartuse, white with red head, and frog color. we just have to keep on trying different colors untill we find what they like the best. Triton21 Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Black buzzbait. Sometimes I will cast as many as 50 times to a point or over a brush pile. It will finally pizz them off so much they will try to kill your bait. Black buzzbait is my go to night bait. Always use a trailer hook. Kelley Quote
tcain38 Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 This situation sounds a lot like the lake I fish but there is a lot of fishing pressure. It sounds like you are using the right baits. I also like to throw a Yum Wooly Bug in red shad color. I have caught some on those. One thing that might help would be the moon. My boss catches a lot of smallmouth when the moon is big compared to when its not. You might also try C-riggin your spots before dark also. Those day time and nightime temps are spot on with our lake. Quote
