I toss all my tubes either texas rigged or on a weighted swimbait hook. I have used tube hooks before, but I can't find a hook that leaves enough exposed for my tastes.

You know what's a pretty neat trick with a tube? Rig it weightless and backwards. The sink much slower that way and is a great finesse technique.

Nate, Bite Me! tube jigs and Venom jigs both have plenty of bite.  The issue with a tube jig isn't the gap, its the weight.  A good smallie, given a chance, can use that weight as leverage by shaking its head, and creating a bigger hole.  This is especially true with the big 3/4 oz. jigs.  Most guys remedy this by using a moderate to mod-fast action rod, at least 7'.

Another issue I have is the tubes I use have a solid head and the tube hooks don't sit in their properly.

Gammy snagless tube weight with a 3/0 EWG hook is tough to beat.

Had some bad luck with Venom hooks... Mine must have been made on a Friday.

i prefer an open jighead with a 60 degree line tie.. this is for fishing open water.. fishing brush or trees id go texas rig with pegged weight

I love Gizits for smallies. The fat IKA is my preferred bait these days.

I've made a number of recent converts to my preferred tube jig...a Fin-tech Titleshot jig.  It's very snag resistant, comes with a Mustad Ultra Point hook and you can catch many fish on one tube before it finally gets too torn up to re-use.  Titleshots come in weights from 1/16 oz. up to over 1 oz. and a variety of hook size options on some weights.  Try the Titleshot jig, not only for tubes, but with craws and beavers also.

It might not be the tube really. But I use venom tubes, I swear by them. Try this, get a led head, something that isn't attached to the hook. Most of the time smallies are looking for crayfish that have molted there shells. If its hard they drop it, have you ever noticed that you get picked up alot? Thats why they pick it up and spit it out. The weight within the tube makes it feel like a crayfish that hasn't molted its shell yet. So I switched over with a led head on the line not on the hook so its soft and I have found that I get alot more fish in the boat using that technique. Texas rigging a tube is also a good choice but I haven't done well doing that.

The original...Bobby Garland Gitzit.  I also throw some BPS tubes...they have lots of different colors and are readily avalible at our local BPS, Gitzits are tougher to find.

We use a special jig head for tubes...custom made and desinged just for them. They are 1/16oz with a 3/0 hook. The light weight gives them a VERY unique fall and the extra large hook helps with hook-up percentages.

i use nothing but a 60 degree flat eye in 1/8 ,1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 and the 1/8, and 1/4 sometimes with rattles. and only use one brand of tubes widowmaker tubes.
