madbass Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 First off, the problem. We absolutely cannot get these brown buggers to bite! This is only my second season targeting smallies in the fall. We're fishing a gin clear natural lake. The water has been hovering around 60*. We see fish cruising or just hanging around on drop-offs 7'-12' down over water twice as deep. Also, off and on during the day over deep water (30'-60') we see small "packs" of fish busting minnows (we think Shiners) on the surface. It lasts for only 5-20 seconds each time. We've tried almost everyting I've read on here to no avail. Question, what water temps do smallies generally go on the best bite? Any thoughts or suggestions. I'm hoping this thread might become a good discussion to help everyone. Quote
bassnleo Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Join the frustrated crowd! I had packs of 4-5 lb smallies busting bait all around me last weekend. I tried everything possible and could not get them to bite anything artificial. They soley wanted those little baitfish. For me in clear water, the best fall bite usually starts below 55 degrees. I actually had my best days when it was 50 or below. It seems the colder it gets the better they bite and can at times be really aggressive. Numerous times I've caught smallies on jerkbaits in 45 degree water. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 20, 2010 Super User Posted October 20, 2010 Try this: Swarming Hornet/ 3 1/2" LFT Live Magic Shad. Cast and let sink to the bottom. Reel fast, then let sink on slack line. Repeat until you feel you are "out of the zone". DO NOT pump your rod, the blade on the Hornet lifts the bait. Pumping just moves the lure forward. 8-) Quote
