lucasbass25 Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I caught my first one over the weekend and tryed the rest of the day for more but didn't even have a bite. I'm a largemouth man myself but feeling the power of that smallie really got my heart pumping. I was fishing in a small pond in northeast ohio. it don't have much to offer for cover a few weeds and a rock pile here and there. caught the one on some scattered rock. I thought that was the thing to be doing but had no luck the rest or the day. I was useing a 1/2 oz jig with a blue n black craw. never fished for them before and want some help learning what works best for you. thanks Luke Quote
405z06 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 yeah, once you go brown, you never go back. Welcome to the obsessive world of smallmouth. Quote
Stingray23 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Its true. I've always been a Large mouth fisherman bacause thats what I thought the local bodies of water had untill I started catching smallies. I would much rather catch a 5lb smallie then a 5 lb largemouth. There is no comparison in the fight you get. Smallie fishing is addictive. Quote

Smallmouth are incredible! Quote

lucasbass25 Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 yea that will be a fish I never forget! if you don't know if a pond has smallies would a football jig be the best thing to use to try to find them? is there a better bait? Quote
shaw24 Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 lucasbass try some bigger creeks in your area - or ask if there are any good smallmouth creeks/rivers around. We have a good size creek around where I live that has exceptional smallmouth fishing. Just heard the other day from our local fly shop that someone they were guiding caught a 6 lber out of there. My PB from the creek is 3.5 lbs and I will NEVER forget the fight I got from that fish! Quote
Scorpio Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 If you live in NE Ohio, by all means go to Lake Erie. Great Smallmouth water. Quote
lucasbass25 Posted August 14, 2009 Author Posted August 14, 2009 sorry That was a missprint. I live in northeast indiana and I cought the fish in ohio at a privite pond. I live near fort wayne does anyone know where I could find any round here? that would be awsome! thanks Quote
farmpond1 Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I've no doubt your fish fought. Any smallmouth will beat a largemouth in a fair fight. But if you get the chance, find yourself some river or stream smallmouth. Those bruisers will convince you you've snagged a mini-submarine on meth. Quote
Paul Benner Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Lucasbass25, I live about 45 minutes from the Ft. Wayne area. I don't know what kind of traveling you want to do for fishing, but there are supposed to be good fishing waters north of Warsaw. There are also some other good lakes over in that area of Kosciusko County. Both are said to have small mouth in them. Best, Paul Quote
shaw24 Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Make a trip down to Sugar Creek near Crawfordsville....one of the best smallmouth creeks in Indiana - if not the best. Quote
Sharpie Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 I happen to know where a small mouth river is. It is located in wells co. Also if you can get a hold of a canoe float down the st marys river there have been monster large mouth bass and small mouth. I live on the river in Decatur but never fished behind log jams ripples and the such. But I am told they are there by a fishing buddy that dosn't make up fish stories. PM me if you are interested. You would swear a 12" river smallie weighs 5 lbs before you see it. Downsize your largemouth baits a little, you will get bit. Smallies are different too. They relate to structure rather than cover like a largemouth does. There is a difference Quote
