revoman Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 For you guys that fish the rivers do you mainly fish the front side of wing dams or the back? The front side would be the side with the current flowing into them. Quote
jerebro Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I usually fish in a large creek that has multiple large dams built in to control level. I personally have no luck just before the water flows over the dam, but have had most of my luck right where the water flows over the dam down into the next part of the creek. Nothing massive yet, but I have caught numerous smallmouth off roostertail's. The structure the lies before the water flows over is really gonna make the big difference on where to fish though, I would just wait it out and test the flow speed and the beneath structure, i never just omit a fishing hole, especially when one half of it is extremely productive. Good luck! Hope I have helped a little! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 10, 2009 Super User Posted August 10, 2009 In front and to the side of any current break. Lazy green fish are sometimes resting in the slack water and eddies, but the brown fish prefer current. 8-) Quote
sodaksker Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Both, Just depends on the day and the amount of water flow. I also like right out on the end of the dike. Where do you do your river fishing? Quote
revoman Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 I fish the Mississippi River in S.E. MN. poll 5A and 6. The reason I ask is that I have always fished the front of the wing dams but last Wed.in our club tourney I took big fish with a 4.29# small mouth fishing the back side than Saturday I picked up a 4.54# smally in a 31 boat tourney to take big fish. Thinking maybe been working the wrong side all these years. Quote
SuskyDude Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 You're only fishing the "wrong side" if you've never caught anything on the front side, which I suspect isn't the case. Fish both. They can both hold smallies. Quote
smallieking Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I fish alot of rivers. and almost all have wingdams. Smallmouths do live on both sides of em. Above the dam is shallower and normally hold smaller fish. I usually dont fish above unless there is alot of current creating backcurrent. if this occurs try throwing small wide wobble cranks. Below are always varible. On larger river that have boat traffic, then the wingdam are larger and the bottomside is much deeper. The bigger the dam the more slack water there is. Bigger smallmouth usually stage in this slack water. Even though i believe the larger wingdams hold higher quality fish, you will probably be fishing smaller ones cuz they are easier to find. so try throwing grubs, tubes and texas rig soft plastics. And if you do fish larger ones, knock em out on flukes and cranks. No matter wingdams hold fish Quote
